Denis Villeneuve Says This One Movie Is as Close to Perfection as It Gets

Denis Villeneuve is a dedicated filmmaker, comparable to directors like Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorsese. Throughout his career, he’s consistently strived for originality, becoming known for his stunning visuals and emotionally resonant stories that explore the human condition.

His skill with filmmaking stems from a lifelong passion for cinema. While he admires films like Seven Samurai and There Will Be Blood, he considers one movie to be above the rest. In a BBC Radio 1 interview, when asked about his most-watched film, he immediately answered Apocalypse Now.

Villeneuve described Francis Ford Coppola’s war film as more than just a movie he watched – he immersed himself in it. He’s studied it extensively and estimates he’s seen it countless times. He considers the film nearly flawless and incredibly inspiring, praising its powerful depiction of the horrors of war through stunning imagery and a gripping narrative.

Despite directing intense and dramatic movies, Villeneuve also enjoys lighthearted entertainment. He recently surprised many by revealing his love for James Bond, saying a good Bond film is the perfect pick-me-up when he’s feeling down, and he particularly favors the more recent installments.

He mentioned Casino Royale and Skyfall as two of his favorite films, explaining he watched them repeatedly during tough times in his life. His direction of action sequences and the epic scope of films like Apocalypse Now clearly show the impact of the Bond movies, especially when you look at how he created the vast desert planet in his film Arrakis.

This year has been incredibly busy for director Denis Villeneuve. Following the success of the first two Dune films, he spent the latter half of 2025 shooting the final movie in the trilogy, Dune: Part Three, in Budapest and Abu Dhabi. Timothée Chalamet has confirmed filming is complete, and the movie is now being edited for its December 18th release.

The upcoming Dune sequel will be based on the novel Dune Messiah and boasts a fantastic cast. Zendaya, Florence Pugh, and Rebecca Ferguson are all returning, and Robert Pattinson has officially signed on to play a key villain.
