Whoopi Goldberg Slams Elon Musk, Implies He is “Ugly” Over Lupita Nyong’o Casting Backlash in ‘The Odyssey’

As a movie critic, I have to say, Whoopi Goldberg really came to Lupita Nyong’o’s defense on yesterday’s The View. She didn’t hold back at all when addressing Elon Musk’s recent comments criticizing the possibility of Nyong’o starring in Christopher Nolan’s new film, The Odyssey. It was a pretty direct response, and she clearly wasn’t happy with his public critique.

Over the weekend, Elon Musk sparked controversy by criticizing director Christopher Nolan’s potential casting choice for Helen of Troy. He responded to rumors that actress Yalitza Aparicio would play the role, claiming Nolan had “lost his integrity.” Musk was echoing concerns from another user who argued that casting a Black actress in the traditionally fair-skinned and blonde role would not make sense for the film’s story.

During a discussion, Goldberg directly addressed Elon Musk, challenging his comments about a legendary figure. She explained that the character, as described in ancient stories, was portrayed as fair-skinned and blonde, so beautiful it sparked a war. Goldberg then pointed out that Lupita Nyong’o is a globally recognized beauty icon herself.

She pointed out that Lupita is widely considered one of the most beautiful women in the world, and questioned what I was getting at. She added that seeing the movie wasn’t necessary.

Goldberg also advised Musk to examine his own behavior before criticizing others. She pointedly told him, “If you’re worried about how people look, maybe you should look in a mirror.” Anticipating a response on social media, she added, “Don’t even try to come at me, I’m aware of how I look. I have plenty of harsh things I could say to you, but I’m choosing not to, though believe me, I’m thinking them.”

Sunny Hostin, also on the show, pointed out that beauty is a matter of opinion and suggested Elon Musk has a history of problematic online behavior. She specifically claimed he’s promoted white supremacist views online, while Sara Haines joked that Musk might be surprised to learn about Jesus’s Middle Eastern heritage. Despite the online debate, Christopher Nolan’s new film, The Odyssey, is still expected to be a major release in 2026, scheduled to premiere on July 17th.

Christopher Nolan’s new film is a grand adaptation of the classic story of Homer’s Odyssey, boasting a star-studded cast. Matt Damon plays the role of King Odysseus, with Tom Holland as his son, Telemachus, and Anne Hathaway as his devoted wife, Penelope.

The film also stars Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Zendaya as Athena, Charlize Theron as Circe, and Jon Bernthal as Menelaus. With a budget of $250 million, it’s groundbreaking as the first movie ever filmed entirely using IMAX cameras, and promises stunning visuals that will be far more impressive than anything people are discussing online.

Should actors playing mythological figures look like they’re described in ancient stories, or should director Christopher Nolan be free to cast whoever best fits his artistic vision?
