Jacob Elordi recently told a funny story about how he almost took his preparation for the role of Heathcliff in the new Wuthering Heights adaptation too far. He was talking to Esquire when he remembered a playful comment from his makeup artist, Siân Miller. She was designing the fake scars for his character and jokingly said that if Daniel Day-Lewis were playing the role, he’d probably show up with actual scars!
Elordi playfully responded with a joke, exaggerating his commitment to the role by saying he’d even injure himself at home over the weekend to prove his dedication. However, his joke unexpectedly came true that very night. He explained that during filming for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein the previous year, he’d become frustrated with the constant makeup removal. So, he promised himself he’d stay exceptionally clean while working on Wuthering Heights.
He was carefully washing his feet in the steam shower at the rental house when he accidentally leaned into a hot brass knob. The intense heat caused a second-degree burn on his back, and he was in a lot of pain.
When he came to work on Monday, the joke about method actor Daniel Day-Lewis didn’t land well. Director Emerald Fennell recalled being panicked when she received a text saying he was hospitalized early in filming. Later, she playfully asked him if the injury was a dedication to Day-Lewis’s intense commitment to his roles.
As a lifelong movie fan, I’ve always been fascinated by actors who really become their characters, and Daniel Day-Lewis is probably the most famous example of that intense approach. It was interesting to hear him talk recently about how misunderstood that whole process is. Promoting his short film, Anemone, he said most critics just don’t get what the Method is actually about. He doesn’t see it as some weird, made-up science or a strange cult, but as a way to truly let go and allow genuine, spontaneous reactions to happen when you’re filming. For him, it’s not about shutting the world out, but about creating a personal space where you can respond truthfully to anything that happens in the moment.
Jacob Elordi is having a major moment in Hollywood. He recently won a Critics’ Choice Award in January for his role as the Creature in Frankenstein, and is now a strong contender for an Oscar in the same category.
Fans are excited for the release of Wuthering Heights on February 13th, where he stars with Margot Robbie in a new, intense take on the classic story, as promised by director Emerald Fennell.
Beyond that, Elordi will also appear in Ridley Scott’s upcoming science fiction film, The Dog Stars, later this year, alongside Margaret Qualley and Benedict Wong.
