HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us likely won’t deviate much from the story of the original two video games, and it appears the show may only last for three seasons. According to Casey Bloys, head of HBO programming, a third season is currently planned, and it sounds like it will be the last. While not a definitive statement, Bloys indicated that the final decision rests with the show’s creators.
Things have changed for HBO’s The Last of Us. Last year, the network suggested the show might last for four seasons. Francesca Orsi, an HBO executive, said they were considering four seasons, with two more to follow after the current one. However, there’s been some internal creative restructuring since then. Neil Druckmann, a key figure from the game’s developer Naughty Dog, is stepping away from the show before season three begins, and that likely prompted a shift in plans.
HBO’s The Last of Us is still incredibly popular with both critics and audiences. However, like the Game of Thrones spin-offs, it’s a costly show to make. With Pedro Pascal no longer playing Joel, HBO is likely considering whether a fourth season would attract enough viewers. If season three performs well, they might decide to end the series while it’s still strong. Either way, we anticipate HBO will announce its future plans for The Last of Us soon.
