Movie theaters are currently showing a wide variety of films, from big animated sequels to smaller, more unusual horror movies. This weekend was particularly competitive, with several new releases going up against popular films that have been out for a while. Because of this mix of established franchises and original movies with well-known actors, the box office results show a lively and changing market for both theaters and movie studios. Here’s a look at the fifteen films that performed best this weekend.
‘Clika’ (2026)

“Clika” tells the story of a musician in a small town who’s trying to make it big in the growing Mexican-American music world. When a video of him playing goes viral, he suddenly finds himself dealing with the challenges and excitement of becoming internet famous. The film is directed by Michael Greene and the script was written with Sean McBride and Ski-ter Jones. Starring Jay Dee, Daniel ‘Doknow’ Lopez, and Uziel Pantoja Delgado, “Clika” is a new musical drama from Columbia Pictures, expected to be released in early 2026.
‘Primate’ (2025)

The sci-fi thriller ‘Primate,’ released by Paramount Pictures International, has been playing in theaters consistently throughout the winter. The movie delves into complex scientific ideas about intelligence and survival. Even after four weeks and with fewer theaters showing it, ‘Primate’ is still performing well, demonstrating that audiences enjoy this type of story. It’s proving to be a solid, moderately-budgeted success for the studio.
‘Anaconda’ (2025)

The movie ‘Anaconda’ is a fresh take on the popular giant-snake horror series, released by Sony Pictures. Starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd, it combines action and humor with the traditional story of people trying to survive in the wild. Directed by Tom Gormican, the film centers on a group of friends who become the prey in a perilous jungle. It’s been consistently popular at the box office for the past six weeks and has brought this type of creature-feature horror to a new audience.
‘Return to Silent Hill’ (2025)

Christophe Gans, who previously directed the first ‘Silent Hill’ movie in 2006, is back with ‘Return to Silent Hill.’ This new film, based on the popular video game ‘Silent Hill 2,’ tells the story of a man’s search for his missing beloved in a mysterious, fog-covered town. Starring Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson, the movie is filled with strange creatures and unsettling imagery. While initially released widely, ticket sales dropped significantly in its second week, suggesting it’s mostly attracting viewers who are already fans of the game.
‘Hamnet’ (2025)

‘Hamnet,’ directed by Chloé Zhao, is a historical drama inspired by Maggie O’Farrell’s acclaimed novel. The film centers on Agnes Hathaway and her heartbreaking experience losing her son. Starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley, this Focus Features production delves into themes of grief and artistic expression in 16th-century England. After ten weeks in theaters, ‘Hamnet’ continues to attract audiences who enjoy well-made period films and powerful performances, and is gaining momentum during awards season.
’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ (2025)

As a huge fan of the original ’28 Days Later’ and ’28 Weeks Later’, I was really excited for ’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’. It continues the story, following a fresh group of people trying to survive in a world still wrecked by the Rage virus. I thought it was a really gritty and tense thriller, and with Jodie Comer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the cast, I had high expectations! It was distributed by Sony Pictures, but sadly, it lost a lot of screens in its third week as newer movies came out. Still, it’s definitely a film horror fans are still talking about, which is a good sign!
‘Marty Supreme’ (2025)

Directed by Josh Safdie and starring Timothée Chalamet, ‘Marty Supreme’ is a new A24 film inspired by the life of ping-pong player Marty Reisman. The movie captures the unique world of competitive ping-pong and features appearances by Gwyneth Paltrow and Tyler, the Creator. A stylish film set in the past, it’s been a commercial success for the studio over the last seven weeks, proving A24’s knack for creating compelling, character-focused independent films. It’s consistently earned strong ticket sales in each theater where it’s shown.
‘The Housemaid’ (2025)

Lionsgate’s ‘The Housemaid’ is a suspenseful thriller based on a popular novel. Starring Sydney Sweeney, the film follows a young woman who discovers hidden secrets while working as a maid for a rich family. Amanda Seyfried also stars in the movie, directed by Paul Feig, which focuses on building tension and mystery within a family home. After seven weeks in cinemas, ‘The Housemaid’ has earned over $100 million in the US, proving the popularity of its leading actresses.
‘Mercy’ (2025)

The new film ‘Mercy,’ starring Chris Pratt, follows a detective framed for a crime he didn’t commit. Directed by Timur Bekmambetov and released by Amazon MGM Studios, it’s a fast-paced, sci-fi action thriller with Rebecca Ferguson and Annabelle Wallis. While the film started with decent numbers, viewership dropped significantly in its second week. It’s currently appealing to viewers who enjoy futuristic crime dramas.
‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ (2025)

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ is the latest film in James Cameron’s popular ‘Avatar’ series, continuing the story on the moon of Pandora. This new installment features a fierce new Na’vi clan, the Ash People, who force the main characters to see their world in a different light. Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña reprise their roles in this visually stunning movie, which showcases exciting volcanic landscapes. Even after seven weeks in theaters, the 20th Century Studios film is still a box office hit, having already earned a huge amount of money worldwide.
‘Shelter’ (2026)

The new survival horror film ‘Shelter’, released by Black Bear, premiered this weekend alongside several major movies. The story follows a group of people trying to find safety from an unknown danger, but they soon realize their hiding place might not be secure. It opened in over 2,000 theaters and is performing reasonably well despite competition from popular blockbusters and sequels. This film is the latest attempt by the production company to create thrilling, original suspense stories, and initial audience numbers show it’s off to a good start.
‘Zootopia 2’ (2025)

The animated sequel ‘Zootopia 2’ brings back Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde for a new mystery in the bustling city of Zootopia. Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman return to voice the beloved characters. Remarkably, the film’s box office numbers have actually increased after ten weeks, bringing its total earnings over $400 million and confirming its huge success. Families are still a key audience, continuing to support the film weeks after it first came out.
‘Melania’ (2026)

“Melania” is a new biographical drama from Amazon MGM Studios that explores the life of the former First Lady. The film follows her story, from the beginning of her career to her years living in the White House, offering a cinematic portrayal of her time in the public eye. It opened in almost 1,800 theaters and appealed to audiences interested in modern political figures. The movie had a strong opening weekend, ranking among the top three releases, and stands out as a major film that isn’t part of an existing franchise this season.
‘Iron Lung’ (2026)

Mark Fischbach wrote, directed, and stars in ‘Iron Lung,’ a scary and confined horror film inspired by the indie video game of the same name. The story centers on a prisoner who must pilot a submarine through a sea of blood on a lonely moon. The film generated a lot of excitement from Fischbach’s fans and was released independently in many theaters. It performed very well, coming in second place, which proves that online creators can succeed in filmmaking. The movie relies heavily on realistic effects and creates a deeply unsettling mood.
‘Send Help’ (2026)

Directed by Sam Raimi, ‘Send Help’ is a thrilling survival story released by Disney. The film follows Rachel McAdams as she struggles to survive after a plane crash leaves her stranded on a deserted island.
