Adam Sandler Reveals His Favorite Movie of All Time and Fans Did Not Expect It

Adam Sandler has become known in Hollywood for successfully moving between silly comedies and more serious, dramatic roles. He’s recently excelled in dramatic parts, especially in the 2019 film Uncut Gems. In that movie, he plays a jewelry dealer who is stressed and overwhelmed by debt and addiction, giving a performance that critics praised for its realistic mix of desperation and likability.

Although his recent, more serious roles have gained him critical acclaim, the actor is still best known for the funny movies he made in the nineties. Films like Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore were so successful that they allowed him to start Happy Madison, his own production company, where he continues to collaborate with many of the same comedic actors. Even with a packed schedule of producing and starring in popular films around the world, he recently shared that he has a particular favorite movie he cherishes.

Adam Sandler revealed in a conversation for his book, You Gotta See This, that The Wizard of Oz from 1939 is his all-time favorite movie. He happily admitted it’s an easy choice for him, even though it might be a surprising pick for a comedian known for his style of humor. He playfully added that while his mother sometimes suggests they watch it, he’s usually the one initiating a viewing and getting her to watch with him.

Adam Sandler considers this movie a pinnacle of filmmaking, and has said he loved watching Dorothy and the Scarecrow as a child. He always believed the Scarecrow had a heart throughout the entire story. While his own films aren’t usually as big and fantastical as The Wizard of Oz, observant fans have noticed small references to the classic in some of his older movies, like the music in Little Nicky.

Adam Sandler is having a great year, following the positive reception to his recent film, Jay Kelly. Released in late 2025, this Netflix dramedy directed by Noah Baumbach features Sandler as the dedicated manager of a declining actor played by George Clooney. His performance has earned him critical acclaim and a Best Supporting Actor award from the Astra Film Awards this January.

The actor shows no signs of slowing down! He’s receiving the Maltin Modern Master Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival this week, and he’s also starting work on Grown Ups 3 in Vancouver. He’ll be filming alongside his frequent co-stars Kevin James, Chris Rock, and David Spade, after his recent film Happy Gilmore 2 became a huge streaming hit.

This spring, fans can see Adam Sandler perform live on his “You’re My Best Friend” stand-up tour, including a special performance at the Hollywood Bowl for a charity event in May. With both critically acclaimed dramatic roles and a return to his popular comedic work, Sandler continues to show he’s a remarkably talented and lasting presence in the entertainment world.
