Quentin Tarantino Explains Why the Matrix Sequels Lost What Made the Original Special

Quentin Tarantino first gained attention with his 1992 film, Reservoir Dogs, but it was Pulp Fiction in 1994 that really changed American movies. The film won the Palme d’Or award and was nominated for seven Oscars, quickly establishing Tarantino as a hugely influential filmmaker.

For the past thirty years, he’s become incredibly popular worldwide thanks to his distinctive style, showcased in films like the Kill Bill series and his 2019 movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He’s known for working with top actors like Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, and for his movies’ clever writing and carefully chosen music.

Because he’s known for his incredible knowledge of film, people have always wondered which movies the director loves the most. In a 2009 interview with Sky Movies, Tarantino shared his favorite films since he started directing, and he named the extremely violent Japanese film Battle Royale as his number one pick.

He also loved the 1999 sci-fi hit The Matrix, and was actually at its very first showing in theaters. He still thinks the original movie is fantastic, but he’s admitted that the sequels changed how he feels about the entire series.

The director confessed that at one point, he considered the Wachowski project to be his second-favorite film ever, only surpassed by Battle Royale. However, he explained that the subsequent sequels ultimately harmed his appreciation for the film’s story and world-building.

Tarantino explained that the sequels made it difficult for him to appreciate the original Matrix film the way he used to. His opinion changed after The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions came out in 2003, as many critics thought those films didn’t live up to the excitement and originality of the first one.

Although he wasn’t happy with how the sequels turned out, the director admitted they didn’t ruin the impact of the original 1999 film. While he now ranks the original lower on his personal list, it’s still one of his twenty favorite movies of all time.

Although Quentin Tarantino is directing fewer films now that he’s starting a family, he’s still very involved in filmmaking. He recently completed the screenplay for a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, titled The Adventures of Cliff Booth, which David Fincher is directing. The movie is expected to be released on Netflix later this year.

This new project has a massive $200 million budget and will bring back Brad Pitt as the beloved stuntman he played to Oscar-winning acclaim. Elizabeth Debicki and Scott Caan are also part of the cast.

I’m still waiting to see what his tenth and final movie will be, but honestly, I’m glad he’s taking his time. He actually tossed out his previous idea, ‘The Movie Critic,’ because he wants this last film to really feel like the perfect ending to such an amazing career. It’s great he’s holding out for something truly special.
