It seems impossible for a young, orphaned boy from King’s Landing, so knowledgeable for his age, to know the details of every knight and the history of the Seven Kingdoms, yet be intimidated by nobles. The explanation? He’s actually a hidden Targaryen prince. The third episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms finally reveals this secret to those new to the story: Ser Duncan’s small squire, “Egg,” is actually Aegon Targaryen, the grandson of King Daeron II and believed to be the lost youngest son of Prince Maekar. Now that Dunk knows the truth about Egg, his life will be forever changed.
Aerion Targaryen, known as “Brightflame” and the second son of Prince Maekar, reacted violently to a harmless puppet show. He believed a staged dragon death was an act of betrayal and attacked the performers. Unfortunately for him, his youngest brother, Egg, was watching the show and witnessed the entire incident. When Aerion and his guards began the attack, Egg immediately sought help from Ser Duncan. Without hesitation and despite the danger, Ser Duncan intervened after Aerion broke one of the performer’s fingers.
Even if you’re in the right, attacking a member of the royal family is never a good idea. Aerion made a clear mistake by attacking the king’s advisors. It was also a politically unwise move, considering the Targaryens weren’t well-liked by commoners or nobles at the time. But ultimately, knights are sworn to protect royalty, no matter what.

The prince, clearly pleased with himself, immediately ordered his guards to arrest Dunk for hitting his brother, Aerion, and loosening one of his teeth. He threatened to break every bone in Dunk’s body, warning that hitting a royal was usually a death sentence. Just then, the young squire, Egg, who had summoned Dunk and put him in danger, bravely entered the tent. Dunk, who hadn’t spoken until now, quickly intervened to protect Egg. Egg called the guards off by name, but they didn’t immediately recognize him because he’d shaved his head – he’d cut off all his hair to avoid looking like his estranged brother.
Though younger than Aerion, Prince Aegon’s words were enough to prevent a beating for Dunk. However, it’s still uncertain if they’ll be enough to protect Dunk from Aerion’s wrath. What’s clear is that an unknown hedge knight, who once served a forgotten knight, has unknowingly been squiring a lost Targaryen prince. Meanwhile, the prince’s father, Maekar, has been searching for both of his sons, and, during that search, Dunk actually fought with and struck Maekar’s other son.

When Ser Duncan arrived at Ashford, he was a complete unknown, eager to prove himself. However, a disguised Targaryen – a member of the most famous family in Westeros – ensured Ser Duncan the Tall would become widely known. Thanks to Egg, a noble young man who naturally defended those in need like a true knight, Ser Duncan quickly went from obscurity to notoriety.
Dealing with dragons in the Seven Kingdoms almost always leads to trouble, whether people intend it to or not.
