The past year has proven a trying one for those engaged in the pursuit of electric carriages. Governmental whims, alas, are as unpredictable as the weather, and the recent curtailment of incentives, coupled with increased tariffs, has presented a most inconvenient obstacle to progress. Many an ambitious manufacturer has been forced to reconsider their grand designs, and a considerable sum has been lost to regrettable adjustments.

Amongst those attempting to navigate these turbulent waters, the names of Lucid Motors and Nio are frequently mentioned. Both have demonstrated a certain… eagerness, and it is with a discerning eye that we shall examine their prospects, lest enthusiasm outweigh sound judgment.

A Consideration of Eastern Markets

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a manufacturer in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a profitable market. And in this regard, attention should be turned towards the East, where the Chinese market presents a most peculiar, and potentially advantageous, landscape. Governmental support, coupled with a domestic appetite for these novel conveyances, has allowed certain Chinese manufacturers to advance at a pace that leaves their Western counterparts rather breathless. Their ability to offer a more… reasonable price point is, of course, a matter of considerable interest.

Nio, in particular, merits attention. Their recent deliveries have been most encouraging, exceeding previous figures by a substantial margin. A gain of 54.6% in December, and a still more impressive 71.7% for the quarter, suggests a momentum that cannot be easily dismissed. Indeed, a graphical representation of these figures is, if one may be permitted a slight indulgence, quite striking.

Furthermore, the expansion of their newer brands, Onvo and Firefly, offers further promise, contributing a significant portion to their recent success. And, most gratifyingly, an improvement in vehicle margins suggests that this growth is not merely a matter of volume, but of genuine profitability. A most welcome development, to be sure.

A Display of Rapid Advancement

Lucid Motors, too, has demonstrated a commendable, if somewhat belated, increase in production. Their recently launched Gravity SUV experienced a somewhat sluggish start, but appears to have gained momentum in the final quarter, with a production increase of 116%. Deliveries, while not matching the pace of production, have also seen a respectable increase of 31%.

Indeed, it is noteworthy that Lucid has consistently exceeded previous delivery records for eight consecutive quarters, a testament to their perseverance, if not their initial planning. One cannot help but observe, however, that consistent achievement is, in itself, not necessarily indicative of future success.

A Question of Prudence

When considering the matter of investment, both Nio and Lucid present a degree of allure. Both demonstrate a pleasing momentum, but a discerning eye will detect significant differences. Lucid’s expansion, while commendable, is accompanied by a continued drain on resources, and their losses are, regrettably, widening. Their foray into Saudi Arabia, while potentially advantageous, appears somewhat… distracted, particularly given the substantial stake held by the Public Investment Fund.

Nio, on the other hand, exhibits a more promising trajectory. Their losses are narrowing, their margins are improving, and their gross profit is on the rise. They even venture to suggest that 2026 may see them achieve a state of… equilibrium. A bold prediction, to be certain, but one that, if realized, would be a considerable achievement, not merely for Nio, but for the industry as a whole.

Therefore, while Lucid may warrant a cautious observation from the sidelines, investments in Nio, though not without risk, appear, at present, to be the more prudent course. A small position, perhaps, to allow for further observation, but one should always remember that even the most promising carriage requires a skilled driver and a well-maintained road.
