Vin Diesel has consistently proven people wrong throughout his career, achieving huge box office success even though critics haven’t always loved his work. Though often considered a classic action star, his real strength lies in his worldwide popularity. He started pursuing acting in 1990, but it took effort and initiative before he finally found success in Hollywood.
In 1995, Vin Diesel created a short film called Multi-Facial where he explored the challenges of being a multiracial actor. The film was a success, catching the attention of Steven Spielberg, who was so impressed he cast Diesel in his 1998 film, Saving Private Ryan. This role was a turning point in Diesel’s career, opening the door to his famous roles in franchises like Fast and Furious, XXX, and The Chronicles of Riddick.
I was really surprised to learn something about Vin Diesel a while back! He revealed in a book called You Gotta See This that his all-time favorite movie is Gone With the Wind – the classic from 1939. He seriously loves the romance and how huge the movie is. What I found really interesting is that he thinks it’s actually the first action movie ever! He pointed out how Rhett Butler is constantly dealing with all the chaos of the war just to keep his family safe, and that takes a lot of action! It’s cool to hear something like that from someone known for action films himself.
Diesel enthusiastically discussed the film’s technical accomplishments, highlighting how impressive they were for a movie made before digital effects were common. He pointed out that even today, the scene of Atlanta burning is amazing to watch, showcasing the incredible skill involved. He felt the danger in the film was genuinely palpable, and the high stakes successfully blended a romantic story with thrilling adventure.
The actor confessed he was completely captivated by his co-star, Vivien Leigh, praising her as the ideal combination of courage and beauty. He was particularly impressed by her portrayal of Scarlett O’Hara, imagining how difficult it must have been to perform scenes defending her home while wearing a large hoop skirt – he found it incredibly beautiful and flawless. Despite being known for his own strong on-screen presence, he was most moved by her delicate features and determined spirit, which truly won him over.
This year, Vin Diesel is focused on wrapping up the main story of the Fast and Furious franchise with what’s expected to be the eleventh and final film, currently titled Fast Forever. He’s been looking at potential filming locations and keeping fans updated on its progress. He’s also gone back to writing screenplays, recently agreeing to write the live-action movie adaptation of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots for Mattel.
