It’s one thing to pretend on screen, but apparently, a few performers actually created false histories for themselves! They’d invent where they came from, claim different nationalities, or even make up whole life stories, all to get past casting barriers and appeal to audiences. I’ve been researching this, and I’m amazed by how many actors misled directors and the public about who they really were. Here’s what I’ve discovered about those surprising origins.

Iron Eyes Cody

Iron Eyes Cody was a well-known actor who appeared in over 200 movies and TV shows, often playing Native American characters. He became a symbol of Native American representation, famously appearing in a moving anti-littering public service announcement. Throughout his life, he claimed to be of Cree and Cherokee descent, both on and off screen. However, after his death, it was discovered that he was born Espera Oscar de Corti to Italian immigrants in Louisiana.

Korla Pandit

Korla Pandit was a groundbreaking television musician who fascinated viewers in the 1950s with his mysterious performances on the Hammond organ and distinctive turban. He presented himself as an Indian musician born to a French opera singer and a Brahmin father, a persona that helped him overcome racial prejudice and land his own show, ‘Korla Pandit’s Adventures in Music’. However, years after his death, the truth came out: Pandit was actually John Roland Redd, an African American from Missouri who had reinvented himself to succeed in a segregated entertainment world.

Idris Elba

Idris Elba famously hid his British accent to win the role of Stringer Bell in the popular HBO series ‘The Wire’ (2002–2008). The show’s creator, David Simon, had specifically said he didn’t want actors who weren’t American for the realistic Baltimore-based drama. Elba kept up the American accent during auditions, even telling casting directors he was from the United States. He only revealed he was British after four auditions, but his acting was so impressive that producers decided to cast him despite his nationality.

Chief Thundercloud

Victor Daniels was a popular actor in Westerns during the 1930s and 40s, best known for playing Tonto in the ‘Lone Ranger’ serials from 1938 and 1939. He presented himself as a Cherokee chief and became a voice for Native American issues in Hollywood. However, later research indicated he was probably of Mexican or mixed heritage, not the Cherokee or Muskogee background he asserted. Because of this persona, he was often cast in Native American roles during Hollywood’s Golden Age, effectively dominating the market for those parts.

Robert Pattinson

Before becoming famous with ‘Twilight’ in 2008, Robert Pattinson had a hard time finding acting jobs in Los Angeles. He even confessed to telling casting directors untruths about his background to increase his chances of getting cast. He’d pretend to be American and falsely claim he’d trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London to account for his limited experience. He stopped with these fabrications once British actors started becoming more popular in Hollywood.

George Lazenby

George Lazenby, an Australian model, famously landed the role of James Bond in ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ (1969) through a series of clever lies. Having never acted before, he went to great lengths to appear the part, even getting a suit made by Sean Connery’s tailor and sneaking into the audition. He falsely claimed extensive acting experience in Europe and China to explain why he didn’t have a traditional British acting background. Surprisingly, his deception worked, and he became only the second actor to play 007 in a film.

Jay Tavare

Jay Tavare acted in well-known projects like ‘Street Fighter’ (1994), ‘Adaptation’ (2002), and the miniseries ‘Into the West’ (2005). He repeatedly stated he was of Apache, Navajo, and some Latino heritage, which helped him get roles intended for Native American actors. But people in the industry and journalists have found records showing he was actually born in England to parents of European descent. He built his acting career primarily by portraying indigenous characters, relying on this false claim about his background.

Tommy Wiseau

Tommy Wiseau, the creator of the 2003 film ‘The Room,’ intentionally kept his background a secret, crafting an intentionally unclear, possibly American identity. For years, he claimed to be from New Orleans and to have lived in France, even though his accent clearly showed Eastern European roots. He used this ambiguity to present himself as an American filmmaker while making and promoting his now-famous cult film. Later, proof emerged confirming he was actually born in Poland, a fact he had concealed in order to chase his Hollywood ambitions.

Steven Seagal

Throughout his career, action movie star Steven Seagal has repeatedly changed his story about his family background, seemingly to fit the image he wanted to project. He’s claimed to have Italian, Japanese, and Native American roots, often when promoting films like ‘On Deadly Ground’ (1994) and trying to connect with the cultural elements they featured. However, there’s no proof to back up these claims; all reliable evidence points to him being of Jewish and Irish heritage.
