Kumail Nanjiani Bringing Google Unfriendly Graphic Novel SEX CRIMINALS to TV

I’m a sucker for movies and shows that are a little bit dangerous or controversial – the kind that might raise eyebrows just for being mentioned! I felt that way about All You Need Is Kill and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and it’s been a while since something similar has come along that I know I’ll be talking about a lot. It reminds me of The Suicide Squad. According to Deadline, Kumail Nanjiani, his wife Emily V. Gordon, and TV writer Tze Chun are going to adapt the comic book Sex Criminals for Prime Video. Yep, a show called Sex Criminals. That’s… interesting.

This comic has a very unique and independent feel. It centers around Suze, an ordinary girl with an incredible secret: she can freeze time during sex. When she meets Jon, who shares the same ability, they decide to use their powers for a rather unusual activity: robbing banks.

It’s surprising to see a story about two people with such a unique ability actually work, but writer Matt Fraction and artist Chip Zdarsky managed to make it happen! They created the comic series, which ran for 31 issues and one special edition, from 2013 to 2020. Now, Kumail Nanjiani, Gordon, and Chun are adapting it into an eight-episode series for Prime Video, and the show has been officially greenlit. Nanjiani will also star in the series, likely as the character Jon, though that hasn’t been officially announced.

This project is a collaboration between LuckyChap Entertainment, Margot Robbie’s production company, and Winter Coat Films, a company owned by Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon.

According to Gordon and Nanjiani, the comic Sex Criminals perfectly embodies the type of stories Winter Coat hopes to produce – unique love stories set in unusual circumstances. They were immediately drawn to Matt and Chip’s work and are thrilled to be adapting it for the screen with Tze Chun and Prime Video.

Fraction and Zdarsky said they were thrilled to have such skilled people working on their comic book, even jokingly calling it ‘dumb’.
