Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, an Icelandic actor, will play the role of Thor in the upcoming live-action God of War series on Prime Video. The series is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Tall Ship Productions.
Ólafsson is the latest actor to join the cast, following the news that Ryan Hurst will play Kratos, the main character in the series.
This series is inspired by the incredibly popular God of War video games from PlayStation. It will tell the story from the Norse mythology games, focusing on the epic journey of Kratos and his son, Atreus.

Thor’s Story: Broken, Dangerous, and Haunted
This isn’t the heroic Thor you might expect. He’s a broken man, physically large but weighed down by a history of violence. Once a powerful warrior and Odin’s loyal soldier, he’s now tormented by the consequences of his past actions. He copes with the pain by drinking heavily and is separated from his family, though his incredible strength remains, threatening to burst forth at any moment.
Ólafsson has appeared in popular projects like Severance, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and Trapped. He’s also going to play Drago in the upcoming live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon.

More Gods Join the Fight
The cast also includes Teresa Palmer (known for Hacksaw Ridge and A Discovery of Witches) as Phoebe/Sif, who is Thor’s wife and the goddess of family, and Max Parker (from Vampire Academy and Emmerdale) as Heimdall, the watchful guardian of Asgard and son of Odin.
Series Overview
The God of War games follow Kratos and his son, Atreus, on an emotional quest. Kratos wants to fulfill his deceased wife’s last request – to have her ashes scattered from the top of the highest mountain. During their journey, they face battles with both mythical creatures and powerful gods, all while confronting their own personal struggles.
The first two episodes of the show will be directed by Frederick E.O. Toye, an Emmy-winning director known for his work on Shōgun, The Boys, and Fallout. Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander) is the showrunner, and Cory Barlog, the creative director behind the God of War games, is also an executive producer.
Deadline first reporting on the casting of Ólafur Darri Ólafsson.
