So, Energy Fuels (UUUU 16.56%) had a morning. Let’s just say it wasn’t a “Lean In” kind of morning. Shares took a tumble – about 15% – because the U.S. Department of Energy sent out a Request for Information. An RFI. Sounds innocuous, right? It’s basically the government equivalent of sending a group text asking who’s bringing the chips and dip to the nuclear power party.
This RFI is about “Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses.” Think Hogwarts, but with more uranium. They’re looking for places to build advanced reactors, and basically handle everything from making the fuel to dealing with the… leftovers. It’s a full-circle nuclear experience. Submissions are due April 1, 2026. Which, honestly, feels like a very long time to wait for a response. It’s like sending a strongly worded email and expecting a reply before the next ice age.
Context, Please
Last week, the DOE shook things up by canceling a bunch of renewable energy loans – about $83 billion worth. It was like a corporate restructuring, but on a national scale. Nuclear projects, however, got a pass. Which, okay, good for them. It’s nice to see someone get rewarded for not melting down. This new RFI seems to double down on that, suggesting the DOE wants to pair these campuses with data centers. Because apparently, the future runs on nuclear power and cat videos. Makes perfect sense.
What Does This Mean for Energy Fuels Stock?
Investors got spooked, probably because someone mentioned a possible government shutdown. It’s always a good time to panic. But apparently, funding for the DOE is already secured. Which is a relief. Although, knowing Washington, that could change by lunchtime. Honestly, the bigger issue here isn’t the government; it’s Energy Fuels’ bank account. They’ve burned through nearly $146 million in the last year. That’s a lot of avocado toast. Or, you know, uranium.
Look, I’m not saying this is a disaster, but it’s definitely giving me “Enron” flashbacks. And nobody wants to be the last one holding the plutonium. Just saying.
