EA sets date for Anthem server shutdown

Electronic Arts (EA) has revealed that they will permanently turn off the servers for BioWare’s Anthem game. Until January 12, 2026, players can still access and play the sci-fi RPG, but after this date, the game will no longer be available to play, even offline.

In-game premium currency transactions are temporarily unavailable, but any leftover balances can still be used to purchase items. On August 15, 2025, Anthem will no longer be available on EA Play.

EA clarified that the decision won’t impact any positions at BioWare – which is good to hear amidst the recent job cuts at Microsoft and Build A Rocket Boy.

Introduced in February 2019 across PC, PS4, and Xbox One platforms, this online sci-fi role-playing game was anticipated to be BioWare’s blockbuster live-service title. Despite selling over five million copies worldwide, it fell short of Electronic Arts’ commercial targets. The major gameplay revamp announced in 2020 failed to materialize, with development ceasing in 2021.

While players appreciated Anthem’s visuals, combat, movement mechanics, and even enjoyed the experience, they felt that areas traditionally excelled by BioWare, such as its storytelling and overall gameplay, could have been more robust.
