James Gunn Defends Christina Hodson, Writer of DCU’s Batman

James Gunn publicly supported screenwriter Christina Hodson after someone questioned her role in the upcoming DCU movie, The Brave and the Bold.

On the social media platform Threads, a fan questioned James Gunn about a recent statement he made regarding The Brave and the Bold. Gunn had said there was a lot of misinformation about the project, and the fan wondered if this meant that Drew Hodson was no longer working on it.

James Gunn firmly defended Christina Hodson, saying that anyone criticizing her screenwriting likely hasn’t actually read her work. He explained that she was involved in the initial planning of the DC Universe and pointed out that directors often make significant changes to scripts, so judging a writer based on the final film isn’t fair.

Gunn Hints Studio Changes Impacted Flash

Gunn’s comment about “massive liberties being taken” seems to confirm our previous reporting that The Flash movie significantly changed from its initial plan.

As we shared before, the original plan for the ending of The Flash movie was to launch a broader Batman multiverse, with Ben Affleck reprising his role as Batman.

This is likely the original ending and script Hodson created, and it’s potentially the version Gunn mentioned when he called The Flash the greatest superhero film of all time.

Those initial plans were canceled and changed because Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav wanted DC to pursue a new strategy.

Margot Robbie revealed that The Penguin was originally planned as the villain in Birds of Prey. However, he was switched to Black Mask because Matt Reeves wanted to use Colin Farrell as The Penguin in his The Batman movie.

Certainly, Hodson can’t be blamed for all the changes.

Hodson’s Recent Projects and DCU Future

Christina Hodson wrote the screenplays for both Birds of Prey and The Flash, but unfortunately, neither film performed well in theaters.

Even so, James Gunn and Peter Safran have kept her involved to help introduce the new Batman as part of the DC Universe.

Despite mixed reactions from fans, James Gunn’s recent statements indicate that producer Sara Hodson continues to have significant support from studio leadership, and that the finished versions of previous movies might not fully represent her initial vision.
