Creating manga and anime weekly is a fast-paced process, and sometimes stories develop inconsistencies – fans often call these ‘plot holes.’ Some creators overlook these issues, but others actively address them through things like interviews, fan communities, or extra materials. This offers a unique look into the challenges of building and maintaining complex, long-running stories. Whether it’s a forgotten character or a timeline mistake, these creators are willing to admit imperfections to stay honest and connected with their audience.
Akira Toriyama

Akira Toriyama, the creator of ‘Dragon Ball’, often joked about his forgetfulness when it came to details and characters as the series went on. He openly admitted in art books and interviews celebrating the 30th anniversary that he completely forgot about the character Launch, which is why she disappeared from the story. He also pointed out that the way Super Saiyan transformations looked and the appearance of Saiyan tails weren’t always consistent. This explained many of the plot holes fans had noticed over time.
Hajime Isayama

After finishing the ‘Attack on Titan’ manga, creator Hajime Isayama shared that he wasn’t fully satisfied with how the ending turned out. In an interview, he apologized for how certain ideas were presented and explained that the manga format didn’t allow him to fully capture the story’s climax. He specifically mentioned issues with the dialogue and how quickly events unfolded, which caused some confusion about why characters acted as they did and how the story ultimately resolved. Because of these concerns, he made small changes and added more detail to both the final manga volume and the anime version.
Eiichiro Oda

Eiichiro Oda, the creator of ‘One Piece,’ uses the Q&A section in the manga’s collected volumes to fix mistakes and inconsistencies in the story. He’s often apologized for drawing characters incorrectly or putting them in the wrong place at the wrong time. Oda usually explains these small errors with humor, blaming his memory or the fast-paced weekly production. These corrections are then included in the official volumes to keep the story consistent and make sense.
Masashi Kishimoto

Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of ‘Naruto’, has acknowledged some inconsistencies in the series’ timeline. Over the long run of the original ‘Naruto’ manga and anime, details about ages and events – particularly around the Great Ninja Wars – didn’t always match up perfectly. He’s specifically apologized for confusing details regarding the Third Shinobi World War and the histories of the powerful Sannin. He addressed these issues while trying to create a consistent foundation for the sequel series, ‘Boruto: Naruto Next Generations’.
Ken Akamatsu

Ken Akamatsu, the creator of ‘Mahou Sensei Negima!’, has apologized to fans for the series’ sudden ending, which left many storylines unfinished. He explained that a legal battle over the rights to his work while it was published in ‘Weekly Shonen Magazine’ forced him to end the series prematurely. This resulted in unexpected gaps in the story. Akamatsu later tried to resolve these issues with a sequel, ‘UQ Holder!’, which was designed to connect to and finish what ‘Negima!’ started.
Hideaki Anno

As a huge fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the story behind the original ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’ ending. Hideaki Anno has talked a lot about how tough production got, and it really explains why those last two episodes felt so…different. Apparently, they ran out of time and money, which meant a lot of plot points – things about the Angels and what was really going on with Human Instrumentality – just didn’t get wrapped up. It’s amazing to me that he kept coming back to it, first with ‘The End of Evangelion’ and then the ‘Rebuild’ films, trying to fill in those gaps and finally give us the ending we were all hoping for. It really shows how much he cared about the story and the fans!
