Jennifer Grey Returns as Baby in DIRTY DANCING Legacy Sequel

A sequel to the beloved 1980s film Dirty Dancing is finally in the works, forty years after the original’s release. While Patrick Swayze, who starred in the first movie, has passed away, Jennifer Grey will return as her iconic character, Frances “Baby” Houseman, and also serve as an executive producer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the original Dirty Dancing was a surprise blockbuster in the summer of 1987, and its soundtrack, featuring the Academy Award-winning song “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” was a huge success. Lionsgate is producing the new film, which will continue the story as a legacy sequel.

Lionsgate is moving forward with a sequel to Dirty Dancing, enlisting producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, who also worked on The Hunger Games and Crazy Rich Asians. Kim Rosenstock, known for Dying for Sex, is writing the screenplay. Jennifer Grey, who played Baby in the original film, expressed her excitement about the project, saying she’s been thinking about Baby’s future for years and is thrilled to have found the right team to continue the story. Production is expected to begin later this year.

The first Dirty Dancing movie was set in the summer of 1963 at a vacation resort called Kellerman’s in the Catskills, where teenager Baby fell in love with her dance teacher, Johnny Castle, portrayed by Patrick Swayze. If the new film is set in real time, it will take place in 2003. The filmmakers might be trying to capitalize on both the nostalgia for the early 2000s and the 1980s, which could be a smart move. While there have been Dirty Dancing prequels, a reality show, and a Broadway musical, none have matched the success of the original 1987 film. Perhaps bringing back Jennifer Grey will be the key to making this new version a hit.
