George R.R. Martin, the creator of Game of Thrones, has built a truly unique and popular world. His latest series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which premiered on HBO in January 2026, is already a hit with fans. It’s based on his Dunk and Egg novellas and is connected to his epic, but still unfinished, A Song of Ice and Fire series. In a recent interview with James Hibberd of The Hollywood Reporter, Martin revealed he considered different outcomes for some of the major deaths at the end of the Game of Thrones TV show, and these ideas could still influence the future of the story.

The article quickly moves from discussing the show to the book series that originally inspired Game of Thrones. Martin shares that he originally planned an even more violent conclusion, and it seems like some plot points were still undecided.
According to Hibberd, Martin hasn’t fully decided how he’ll end the A Song of Ice and Fire series, and like much of the story, the conclusion is still unclear.
Martin explains he originally planned for more characters to die. He notes the show gave a more optimistic conclusion than he intended, and doesn’t believe Tyrion’s story will have a happy resolution, seeing it as consistently tragic. He even considered killing Sansa, but admits the character has been so well-received on screen that he might spare her.
While the book versions of Tyrion and Sansa were originally intended to meet tragic fates, they both survived in the TV show. George R.R. Martin has hinted that things could still change, as he’s currently writing two more books – The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. These new installments might lead to a very different conclusion than the one we saw on screen. We’ll have to wait and see how it all unfolds.
