Yoshi Takes Center Stage in New ‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ First Look Trailer

As a huge Mario fan, I was thrilled to see the first trailer for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie dropped! It officially confirms Yoshi will be joining the adventure, and it looks like they’re really expanding the scope of the story to include a galaxy-spanning journey. I can’t wait!

The newly released footage, labeled a “Yoshi First Look,” confirms long-held fan expectations following a hint at the end of the 2023 movie: Yoshi will be a playable character in the game.

Watch below.

Yoshi Joins the Adventure

The new trailer showcases Yoshi as a true partner to Mario, not just a brief appearance. We see him racing through strange landscapes, jumping across floating islands, and bravely facing challenges with Mario as their adventure takes them well beyond the familiar Mushroom Kingdom.

The video highlights fast action, grand environments, and quick speeds, suggesting that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will closely follow the style and gameplay of the Super Mario Galaxy video games.

New Galaxies, Bigger Scope

Just like the tagline says – “New galaxies. New friends.” – the trailer gives us a glimpse of many different worlds in space, each with its own unique appearance and how things work.

Hints about planets, star routes, and new worlds indicate the next installment will likely focus on journeys across multiple galaxies, instead of being confined to a single one.

This matches the previous marketing materials and trailers, which showed the new movie will be much bigger and more ambitious than the original.

Returning Creative Team

The new Super Mario Galaxy Movie brings back many of the talented people who made the 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie a success. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are directing, Matthew Fogel wrote the script, and Brian Tyler is once again composing the music.

Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo are leading the production again. Universal Pictures and Nintendo are sharing the cost, and Universal will release the film in theaters worldwide.

Release Date

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens exclusively in theaters on April 1, 2026.

The first Super Mario Bros. Movie was a huge success, earning over $1.3 billion around the world and becoming one of the most popular animated movies ever made. Now that Yoshi is a major character, the next movie is expected to be even more ambitious.
