Jack Black Reveals the Movie Role He Wishes He Had Taken

Jack Black recently shared that he wishes he‘d accepted a role he passed on earlier in his career. In an interview, he revealed he was offered the part of Syndrome, the villain in the popular 2004 Pixar movie, The Incredibles.

When he first heard about the director, Brad Bird – who had previously worked on The Iron Giant – Black admitted he wasn’t familiar with him. “Honestly, I didn’t know who Brad Bird was!” he remembered. This lack of knowledge made him hesitant about both the director and the character he was being offered. Black explained to Bird that the character seemed like a villain, but felt a bit underdeveloped.

He even proposed expanding the character to make it more complex, but the director didn’t appreciate the suggestion. According to Black, the director immediately fired him. Ultimately, Jason Lee landed the role and his performance made Syndrome a truly unforgettable animated villain.

Looking back, Black said he realized he made a mistake. He explained that the movie turned out to be a classic, and he wondered why he had been so stubborn. He regretted missing the chance to be involved.

While promoting his new movie, Anaconda, Anthony Black discussed the film, which was released on Christmas Day. Anaconda is a self-aware reboot of the 1997 classic, and stars Black alongside Paul Rudd as childhood friends attempting to recreate it in the Amazon rainforest. By early 2026, the movie had earned over $128 million globally. Thandiwe Newton and Steve Zahn also appear in the film.

Dwayne Johnson has a lot on his plate! I’m hearing he’s already back at work on the next Jumanji sequel – they’re keeping the title under wraps for now – and he’s reprising his fantastic role as Bowser for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which hits theaters April 1st. It’s good to see him continuing with characters fans clearly love.

Although he occasionally thinks about his role in The Incredibles, Black has achieved great success in other well-known franchises like Kung Fu Panda and the Super Mario movies. His career demonstrates that even famous actors sometimes make choices they later question, but can still have remarkably successful careers.
