They quietly collected $74 billion in the last quarter (ended September 30th, if you’re keeping track, which, obviously, I am). Billions. It’s all very…impressive. And all that user data. Honestly, it’s a little intimidating. Everyone wants a piece of it. It’s like the world’s most exclusive party and everyone is trying to get on the guest list.
They’re already leading the charge on this AI thing, which is good. Being a leader is important. It’s just… leadership needs to translate into actual, you know, revenue. And that’s where things get interesting. I mean, they have all the pieces. It’s just…are they going to use them? It’s a bit like having a really talented chef and then just ordering takeout every night.
There was this little flurry of talk about ads in Gemini, their AI app. Apparently, they were thinking of showing ads to free users. Then, Demis Hassabis, the CEO of DeepMind, said, “Actually, no.” It’s all a bit… indecisive, isn’t it? A bit like me trying to decide what to have for breakfast. Still, there’s potential. Gemini has 650 million monthly active users. 650 million. And most of them are on the free plan. Ads could add a significant boost. It’s a very basic principle, really: monetize the free users. It’s just…sometimes the obvious is the hardest thing to do.

it that’s the hard part. Which is why, frankly, I’m adding Alphabet to my watch list. It feels… prudent. And maybe, just maybe, it’ll finally justify all those hours spent staring at charts.
