Taika Waititi’s planned Star Wars film is generating buzz again after a long period with no news. Originally announced in 2020, the movie was set to be directed by the director of Jojo Rabbit, with a script penned by Krysty Wilson-Cairns, known for her work on 1917. Since the initial announcement, updates have been scarce, leading many to believe the project had been cancelled.
Things shifted recently when Kathleen Kennedy, the former president of Lucasfilm, mentioned the project was still potentially happening. This sparked renewed discussion and left people wondering about Taika Waititi’s plans for the series.
Taika Waititi recently answered questions about his plans for a Star Wars film while at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. He was promoting his new movie, Fing!, but also discussed the overall feel he’s aiming for with his Star Wars project.
Waititi explained to Variety that he’s aiming to recapture the enjoyable spirit of the earlier movies, the way he remembers experiencing them.
He shared that while his film will have its serious parts, he’s aiming for a more fun and lighthearted tone compared to some recent Star Wars movies. Waititi believes the franchise doesn’t always need to be dark and dramatic to feel meaningful.
He explained that while the movies deal with important and intense situations, they’re also incredibly enjoyable. He wanted to recapture that balance in his own work.
I really admire how Waititi is approaching this new project. He’s said he doesn’t want to get too caught up in what’s already been established in other stories, and I think that’s brilliant. With so much content already out there, he wants to create something fresh and stand-alone, and I completely agree with that vision. It feels like the best way to go!
He explained that he preferred to work on projects that felt distinct from everything else happening around them. He wanted to create something unique and independent, rather than getting lost in the mix.
Before leaving Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy expressed confidence in Taika Waititi’s upcoming project, revealing he had already submitted a script that she felt very good about, in an interview with Deadline.
Kennedy described the script as funny and excellent. However, she explained that the final decision about the movie now rests with Lucasfilm’s new leaders, Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan, as she is leaving the company.
Although it’s still unknown what will happen with the Star Wars movie Taika Waititi was previously involved with, he’s been working on other films. He recently presented “Fing!” at Sundance, a family-friendly adventure based on David Walliams’ book. The story centers around two librarians attempting to shield a peculiar, one-eyed creature from a selfish nobleman. Waititi himself plays the comically exaggerated villain, Viscount.
Besides his work on other projects, Waititi recently completed filming Klara and the Sun, a movie based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro and starring Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams. It’s scheduled to come out in 2026. He’s also contributing his voice to a character in the animated film The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender.
With Lucasfilm now under new management, the future of Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie is uncertain. While some fans are eager for a fresh, comedic story that doesn’t connect to existing plots, others hope the studio will stick with well-known characters and established storylines. Currently, the script is written, Waititi still wants to direct, and there’s a possibility the Star Wars universe could explore a new and different type of tale.
