HBO Confirms Early Development of ‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoff Centered on Arya Stark – Here Are The Details

According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO is developing a new Game of Thrones series focused on Arya Stark. The project is in its initial stages, with a writer on board but no actors yet cast—including Maisie Williams, who famously played Arya. Author George R.R. Martin hasn’t made any public statements about the show.

The upcoming series focusing on Arya Stark appears to be taking the place of a planned sequel centered around Jon Snow. That Snow sequel, which Kit Harington was involved with, ultimately didn’t happen. Reports indicate Harington had a grim vision for the character, imagining him as a damaged man suffering from PTSD. He pictured Snow living in isolation, abandoning his sword Longclaw and direwolf Ghost, and even destroying the homes he’d built. Harington apparently also wanted the character to meet a tragic end, rather than have a traditional heroic storyline.

HBO decided not to move forward with a Jon Snow spin-off, feeling the story was too dark. Kit Harington has since said he doesn’t plan to reprise the role, stating he’s happy with his time playing the character and doesn’t want to return to it after a decade.

HBO is planning a new show following Arya Stark after the events of Game of Thrones. It will focus on her adventures as she travels across Essos, starting from where she was last seen sailing west. The idea is to build upon the world of Game of Thrones with fresh faces and a story that isn’t directly connected to the other characters we know.

The future of the ‘Arya’ project is still uncertain, but HBO has big plans for the ‘Game of Thrones’ universe. In addition to the ‘House of the Dragon’ and ‘Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ series already in development, the network intends to expand the world of Westeros on screen through 2028, demonstrating a long-term commitment to the franchise.
