It’s surprising to see Amazon Studios, known for shows like Rings of Power, take a progressive approach with their new Masters of the Universe movie, often described as ‘going woke’.

The latest trailer shows He-Man as a conventionally presented character – a blond, white man – who is shown using pronouns and being challenged by his supervisor, who appears to be focused on diversity and inclusion initiatives. Some viewers have questioned the character’s representation.

And that’s not the only change. Amazon Studios has also altered the show and changed the ethnicities of several characters. For example, they’ve cast Idris Elba in the role of Man-at-Arms, a character previously known for having red hair and a different ethnic background.

Camila Mendes is also a Latino who plays the red-headed Teela.

We’re not done as Kristen Wiig voices Roboto (why?), and Kojo Attah plays Tri-Klops (we know why).

The movie also introduces two new characters, Sasheer Zamata as Suzie and Christian Vunipola as Hussein, who some viewers feel were included primarily to fulfill diversity requirements.

The trailer reveals the story takes place on Earth, and people are already questioning why on X. The simple answer? It’s a cost-saving measure.

To save money, Amazon filmed parts of the movie on Earth instead of creating an entirely fictional world called Eternia.

So in order to do that, they had to change the story, which basically rips off Superman.

It’s clear Adam isn’t very bright while on Earth, and it’s Teela who actually brings him to Eternia, as he’s completely lost and unable to take care of himself.

It’s still to be determined how the movie unfolds after Adam obtains the sword and becomes He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe – though some interpret the sword itself as a symbolic representation of masculinity.
Is Hollywood really going to let fans have the most powerful man in the universe?

Skeletor’s design is actually pretty impressive, but it’s strange that Jared Leto doesn’t actually sound like him. I was expecting to at least see some resemblance to Leto’s face, but maybe the recent issues surrounding him changed those plans. Plus, considering Tron: Legacy wasn’t a huge success, I can understand why they might have played it safe.

The trailer for Masters of the Universe seems enjoyable overall. Setting aside some potentially controversial elements, I think my younger self – the one who once had a letter published in He-Man Magazine – would really like it.

Let’s hope this is all just satire and they get back to focusing on the world of Eternia and He-Man. If not, it looks like the franchise is in serious trouble.
