It’s amazing that stars like Scarlett Johansson, Cate Blanchett, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt – along with over 700 others – are joining together with this campaign called “Stealing Isn’t Innovation.” They’re clearly concerned about how AI is being used in creative fields, and I think it’s important to support their message.

This campaign is challenging tech companies that use artists’ work without getting their approval. The Human Artistry Campaign launched the effort and announced who is backing it.

This campaign brings together artists, industry organizations, and unions to safeguard human creativity in the age of artificial intelligence. A key focus is highlighting how valuable the creative sector is to the economy.

The group stated that America’s creative industry is highly respected globally and significantly contributes to job creation, economic growth, and exports. They also expressed concern that certain tech companies are using the work of American creators to develop AI systems without permission and in violation of copyright laws.

Artists are making it clear that taking credit for someone else’s work isn’t innovative – it’s simply stealing. As one campaign statement put it, “Artists, writers, and creators are united in saying that using our work without permission isn’t progress, it’s theft.”

The group believes technology and art don’t have to be at odds. They pointed out that some companies are already doing the right thing by getting permission to use artists’ work. As they put it, “We can enjoy the benefits of artificial intelligence while still protecting the rights of creators.”

A wide range of well-known figures are supporting the initiative, including musicians like Bonnie Raitt, Chaka Khan, Common, Cyndi Lauper, and Questlove. The list of supporters also includes popular bands such as R.E.M. and OneRepublic, and television creators like Vince Gilligan.

For months, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been speaking out about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. Back in October, he suggested we should temporarily halt the development of highly advanced AI until we can ensure it’s safe.

In a video that has since been removed from X, he asked, “Why aim to create AI that surpasses human intelligence?” He wondered why AI is often envisioned as a single, all-purpose tool, rather than a collection of specialized tools designed for specific tasks. He explained that while he also wants AI to help with things like curing diseases and improving national security, we could simply create dedicated AI tools for each of those purposes.

Scarlett Johansson recently experienced how AI can be misused when a video featuring her appeared online without her permission. She’s now asking the U.S. government to quickly create laws that limit how AI is used, calling it a critical issue that impacts everyone. She believes this is something both Democrats and Republicans should work together on because it will significantly shape the future.
