It’s hard to believe, but it’s been three years since James Gunn first revealed DC’s upcoming movie and TV plans. Fans were particularly excited about Batman: The Brave and the Bold, which will introduce the new DCU Batman alongside his son, Damian Wayne, as Robin. However, progress on that film has been slow, while Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II (which exists outside the main DCU) is moving forward. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Christina Hodson, who wrote Birds of Prey, is now writing the script for The Brave and the Bold. Andy Muschietti, known for directing It and The Flash, is still potentially attached to direct.
So, I’m hearing that the Batman script has been in the works since last fall, and it sounds amazing. The core idea – Batman finding out he has a teenage son, Damian, who’s been raised as a tiny assassin by the League of Shadows – is still the focus. Apparently, it’s all about Batman trying to turn this little, spoiled killer into a proper Boy Wonder. When they first announced the project, they hinted that we might see other members of the Bat-family pop up, maybe even Nightwing and Batgirl! It makes sense, if this Batman is old enough to have a teenage son, he’s likely worked with a few sidekicks over the years.
I’ve been following Christina Hodson’s career for a while now – she’s clearly a Warner Bros. and DC favorite. She penned the scripts for both Birds of Prey and The Flash. Birds of Prey was okay, but The Flash really didn’t land with critics. Still, she keeps getting hired to write DC stories! It’s kind of wild when you look at her unreleased projects, like a Batman Beyond movie and the Batgirl script that Warner Bros. ultimately cancelled. Thankfully, she had a big win with Bumblebee, the Transformers spin-off, which everyone loved. Now, it sounds like James Gunn is being smart about scheduling; he doesn’t want Brave and the Bold to compete with The Batman – Part II, meaning we probably won’t see it until 2028 at the earliest. Fingers crossed all this extra time in development will really make it something special!
