The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand Exclusive Cover Reveal
We’re excited to share a first look at the cover for the new graphic novel set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, titled The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand. This book features a story by Kiku Hughes, a graphic novelist known for her work Displacement, with illustrations by Alexandria Monik (The Legend of Korra: Mystery of Penquan Island), colors by Diana Sousa (Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins), and lettering by Jimmy Betancourt of Comicraft (Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest).
The cover art is striking and immediately grabs your attention. It features a young Kya demonstrating her waterbending abilities while traveling through a desert landscape – skills she inherited from her mother, Katara. While she doesn’t appear to be in immediate danger, she might be using her powers for healing. The skull on the cover suggests someone could use a little help, though. We’ll delve deeper into the mysteries of the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe and what The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand reveals within its pages.
The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand‘s Synopsis Takes Us Back to Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s Si Wong Desert
We can’t wait for this brand-new tale about Aang and Katara’s daughter, Kya. As part of our exclusive reveal of this new Avatar: The Last Airbender graphic novel, we also have the official synopsis of The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand. Here’s what Dark Horse Comics shares.
While Korra is healing in the Southern Water Tribe, Kya tells a story about her younger years. She recounts a time when she felt lost and out of touch with who she was, while traveling alone in the Si Wong Desert.
Newly independent and eager to find her place, Kya ventures out to make a difference. She travels to the remote Si Wong Desert, a troubled area on the edge of the Earth Kingdom where resources are limited and communities are divided. Arriving in the town of Liyuan, Kya intends to share her healing skills and help the people protect themselves from outlaws. However, she soon realizes that the deep-seated scars from years of fighting may be difficult to overcome.
If you enjoyed Avatar: The Last Airbender, you’ll remember the dramatic events that unfolded in Si Wong Desert – and you’ll be thrilled to see it revisited in this new graphic novel. The desert is home to Wan Shi Tong’s Library, a key location that greatly impacted the story. It’s also where Appa was kidnapped, leading to one of the most heartbreaking episodes in the series, “Appa’s Lost Days.” The desert appeared again in The Legend of Korra, and now returns in the new graphic novel, The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand.

The desert setting seems poised to be central to Kya’s upcoming story, and healing will be a major focus. Avatar: The Last Airbender consistently tackles complex issues like war, poverty, and trauma with sensitivity, and this new story appears to continue that tradition, centering on themes of healing and finding purpose. These are compelling ideas to explore. We anticipate Kya will not only help mend divisions within the communities she encounters, but also confront her own inner struggles, ultimately enabling her to assist Korra later on. It promises to be an emotional journey, so we’re preparing for a few tears! We’re also excited to see how The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand will expand the rich history and world of the Earth Kingdom.
