Zack Snyder Teases Batman ‘The Dark Knight Returns’

Zack Snyder recently shared a new image online, and it seems to hint at more to come from Batman’s story.

The picture features Snyder’s workspace, covered with pottery. However, observant viewers noticed a copy of Frank Miller’s famous graphic novel, The Dark Knight Returns, hidden in the corner.

“Down in my studio- Arroyo Clayworks,” said Snyder.

Zack Snyder wants Ben Affleck as Batman

Snyder has long expressed interest in adapting the story in a comic-accurate way (see below).

Now that Netflix has bought content from Warner Bros. Discovery, some viewers are speculating if this is a hint of a larger partnership or deal.

According to insiders, Zack Snyder is hoping to have Ben Affleck reprise his role as Batman, and Affleck is considering it if the conditions are right.

It seems Zack Snyder is sharing behind-the-scenes photos from his Justice League work for a reason beyond just reminiscing. Sources say he’s gauging fan reaction, and the response has been incredibly positive.

With Ben Affleck’s new film, The Rip, landing on Netflix and the actual Batsuit now housed at their studio, many are wondering if Zack Snyder might tackle a live-action version of The Dark Knight Returns for the streaming service next.

If Paramount happens to nab WBD, we’re told the SnyderVerse could be fully back in play.

What has Zack Snyder said about The Dark Knight Returns?

Zack announced back in December 2023 that he planned to retire from playing superheroes after The Dark Knight Returns.

Zack Snyder explained that in Watchmen, Alan Moore reimagined classic superhero tropes. Characters like Night Owl echo Batman, and Doctor Manhattan shares qualities with Superman, allowing for a deeper analysis of archetypical heroes when comparing them.

Zack Snyder explained that The Dark Knight Returns was a turning point for comics because it realistically portrayed iconic heroes like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman while also cleverly dismantling the traditional superhero archetype. He felt the book profoundly challenged his own understanding of superheroes, and considers it the greatest comic book ever written. He added that if he could create works as impactful as Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns, he’d feel he’d accomplished everything he wanted to do with the superhero genre.
