Tall Team, the creators of the popular game Smash Karts, have launched their newest title, Obby Roads, only on Poki. This release follows their previous successes and highlights their unique style of game design. It’s a testament to what a small, imaginative team can achieve.
Tall Team’s Origins
Tall Team launched in Dublin in 2020. It was started by John Halloran and two partners who decided to leave their previous jobs to have complete creative control. The team intentionally chose not to seek outside funding so they could prioritize work-life balance and concentrate on making games.
The team’s first game, Smash Karts, launched in March 2020 and blended fast-paced racing with exciting combat. From the beginning, players could enjoy the game on various devices, including web browsers and smartphones.
This way of working proved key to Tall Team’s success, including their recent partnership with Poki to release Obby Roads only on Poki’s website. Because of their flexible studio setup, they could quickly respond to player feedback and create popular games with limited resources.
Smash Karts as Tall Team’s Iconic Success
Smash Karts is a fast-paced racing game where up to eight players battle it out on small tracks for three minutes at a time. Players collect power-ups like missiles and health boosts while trying to knock each other out. The game has become popular with over 70 million players thanks to its free-to-play model and ads.
Advertising shown while players waited to rejoin matches helped cover the costs of running the game, which kept a steady number of players coming back each day. Frequent updates to the game maps and changes to items, based on player data, kept things fresh and engaging. Plus, competitive leaderboards motivated players to keep coming back, solidifying the game’s popularity in the browser-based multiplayer scene by the end of 2025.
A New Chapter with Obby Roads
Tall Team’s newest game, Obby Roads, launched on Poki in 2025. It’s a casual game where players drive vehicles through challenging 3D courses filled with moving obstacles, platforms, and tricky jumps. Players use the keyboard to accelerate, jump, and steer, and the game works on many different devices.
Players can test their skills in single-player challenges against the best recorded times, or practice to improve their abilities. The game was improved thanks to feedback from playtesters, which helped create better vehicle handling and more balanced obstacles. As you progress, you’ll unlock over 20 different vehicles, each designed to excel on certain parts of the tracks – like tight beams or challenging hills.
What Tall Team Achievements So Far Mean
A small, self-funded game studio is getting results similar to those of much bigger companies. They’ve achieved this by concentrating on making the core gameplay really solid, and by making development decisions based on what’s best for the game, rather than what investors want.
As a fan, I’m really impressed with how they’re getting the game out there! It seems like just using web browsers automatically helps it reach a lot of people and grow, without needing to spend a ton on advertising. Plus, the way they’re building the game – with a focus on playing with others, things you can do over and over, and regular updates – feels a lot like those really popular online games that keep players hooked. What’s even cooler is their development process. They build things quickly, let players test them, and then improve it bit by bit. It’s a smart way to work and doesn’t cost a fortune, which is great – I hope other indie developers can learn from what they’re doing and keep making awesome games!
A Promising Future with Poki
Working with Poki will instantly put Tall Team’s games in front of 100 million players, which is a great fit since their games are designed for web browsers. John Halloran, who co-founded Tall Team, shared his excitement about this new partnership:
We’re excited to launch Obby Roads on Poki! We’ve worked with Poki for a long time and really trust their team. From the start, they understood our vision for how popular Obby Roads could become on their site. We have big plans for the game, and we’re confident Poki is the perfect partner to help us make it a huge success online.
The game is off to a good start on Poki, with early numbers looking positive, which encourages us to keep working on it.
