Billie Eilish used her acceptance of the MLK Jr. Beloved Community Award for Environmental Justice this weekend to strongly criticize the current political situation in the U.S. Instead of a typical acceptance speech, she spoke out against the Trump administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The King Center hosted the event to celebrate efforts for environmental justice, but Billie Eilish pointed out how far we still are from achieving that goal, given the current situation.
The singer started her speech by being honest about how strange it felt to receive the award. “I truly don’t feel like I deserve this,” she told the crowd. She explained that it was difficult to celebrate progress when it seemed like the country was actually moving backwards in terms of human rights and safety.
She expressed feeling conflicted about being recognized for her environmental justice work, noting that it felt difficult to be optimistic given the current challenges facing the country and the world. She then detailed her concerns about the current state of American life, specifically mentioning harsh deportation policies and the silencing of opposing viewpoints.
Billie Eilish addressed the crowd, describing a disturbing pattern of injustice: neighbors being kidnapped, peaceful protesters attacked and killed, and basic civil rights being taken away. She linked these issues to the climate crisis, explaining that mismanaged resources – specifically, cutting funding for climate solutions in favor of fossil fuels and animal agriculture – are destroying the planet. She sees this as evidence of a much bigger problem with the way things are run.
Eilish also pointed out that essential things like food and healthcare are increasingly becoming unaffordable, available only to the wealthy. She expressed concern that access to these basic needs is shifting from a right for everyone to a privilege for the rich. Her speech strongly criticized the government, implying they are intentionally overlooking the needs of those most vulnerable.
She stated plainly that this administration doesn’t seem to care about protecting the environment or the well-being of its citizens. She added that it’s difficult to feel celebratory when people don’t feel safe at home or in public. Despite this serious mood, she thanked the other activists present for their continued dedication and organizing efforts, even when facing challenges.
She expressed feeling inspired by the stories of fellow honorees and everyone present, and voiced gratitude for the large community working to uphold Dr. King’s vision. Eilish also stated that she believes celebrities have an obligation to use their voices. She explained that her platform is something she feels responsible to utilize, and that she’s simply doing what anyone with her reach should do.
Billie Eilish recently used an awards speech to criticize the Trump administration, specifically calling out ICE’s actions and violations of civil rights. She highlighted issues like the detention of immigrants, violence against protestors, and the erosion of civil liberties, as well as concerns about climate change funding.

Billie Eilish recently challenged wealthy individuals, asking why they’ve accumulated so much money and suggesting they donate it. She spoke to a room full of business leaders, continuing her pattern of using her platform to support causes she believes in – like veganism, fighting climate change, and protecting women’s reproductive rights. Eilish has become known for combining popular music with a commitment to social issues since she first gained fame.
Billie Eilish rose to fame in 2015 with her first song, “Ocean Eyes,” which was written and produced by her brother, Finneas. Together, they’ve become one of the most celebrated songwriting teams ever, winning Grammys in all four major categories and two Academy Awards for Best Original Song.
Her new album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, shows a clear growth in her music. It’s a departure from the softer sound of her first album, exploring a wider range of styles.
