I’m really excited – we finally have an update on J.J. Abrams’ next movie! After spending the last fifteen years or so bringing us new Star Trek and Star Wars adventures, Abrams promised this one would be something completely fresh. Well, Deadline just announced it’s called The Great Beyond, and it’s hitting theaters November 13th! Even better, they’ve revealed the cast: Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Merritt Wever, and – wow – Samuel L. Jackson are all going to be in it. I can’t wait to see what Abrams has cooked up!
Let’s talk about The Great Beyond, originally called Ghostwriter. The film follows a fantasy author, played by Glen Powell (known from The Running Man), who writes incredibly popular novels about a fantastical world. He soon discovers that this world he created isn’t fiction – it’s actually real! The story then focuses on his journey to find a way back home. It seems the filmmakers drew some inspiration from the ’80s sci-fi film The Last Starfighter, which isn’t surprising considering J.J. Abrams’ fondness for that era.
J.J. Abrams has often been labeled as a director who primarily works on established franchises. He started with Mission: Impossible III, then rebooted Star Trek with two films, and later directed two Star Wars sequels. His only truly original film is Super 8, which many see as a precursor to Stranger Things. His new movie, The Great Beyond, will give him a chance to show he’s capable of more than just reimagining beloved classics. We’ll see if he succeeds when the film releases in theaters and IMAX this fall.
