Small Reactors & Very Large Hopes

The situation, as they say, is…interesting. We find ourselves in an age where demanding more from the electric grid is akin to asking a tired troll to perform calculus. Artificial Intelligence, that burgeoning collection of algorithms with an insatiable appetite for power, is predicted to increase energy needs tenfold by the end of the decade.1 And the grid? Well, let’s just say it’s seen better centuries. It’s less a robust power network and more a collection of wires held together by hope and a surprisingly effective series of duct tape repairs.

So, how do we feed this digital beast without plunging entire cities into darkness or, worse, causing the price of a simple lightbulb to exceed the cost of a small dragon? Enter Nano Nuclear Energy (NNE +6.86%), a company proposing a solution that, on the face of it, sounds suspiciously like something out of a Jules Verne novel.

Nano Nuclear aims to deploy small, portable nuclear reactors – essentially, power stations you could, theoretically, park on a loading dock.2 Now, other companies, like Oklo (OKLO +3.83%) and NuScale (SMR +6.83%), are also tinkering with small modular reactors. But Nano Nuclear isn’t just aiming for “small”; they’re aiming for “remarkably, almost improbably, mobile.” The idea is to match the breakneck speed at which tech companies are erecting data centers, providing power before the last server rack is even bolted down.

There’s just one small, rather significant, snag. Nano Nuclear hasn’t yet received regulatory approval to deploy its reactor design. Which means, at present, it generates precisely zero revenue. It’s a bit like having a magnificent, fully-equipped siege engine and no castle to besiege.

To transform a modest $1,000 investment into a rather extravagant $100,000 – a hundredfold return – Nano Nuclear needs to not only navigate the labyrinthine corridors of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) but also, shall we say, dominate the energy sector. A valuation of $180 billion would place it amongst the energy behemoths, a position currently occupied by companies with, let’s be honest, a rather larger track record.

Is it impossible? No. Improbable? Considerably. A tenfold gain, even, would require significant progress with the NRC, concrete agreements for deployment, and, crucially, actual revenue. That’s several years away, at least. The market, being what it is, doesn’t particularly care for “potential” without a generous helping of “actual.”

As such, Nano Nuclear remains a highly speculative play. A $1,000 investment could yield a fortune, or it could vanish into the ether like a poorly-cast illusion. It’s a gamble, pure and simple, dressed up in the language of innovation. And in the world of high finance, sometimes, that’s all it ever is.

1 The Electric Power Research Institute, bless their data-crunching hearts, predict this. Of course, predictions are like prophecies – best taken with a grain of salt and a healthy dose of skepticism. Especially when they involve exponential growth.

2 This raises interesting logistical questions. Do they come with cup holders? What’s the warranty on the containment vessel? And, crucially, who’s responsible for refueling?
