Jodie Foster is a celebrated actress with a long and successful career in Hollywood. Though she’s known for powerful, dramatic roles in films like The Silence of the Lambs and The Accused, her start in the movie business was surprisingly dangerous. While filming her first movie, Napoleon and Samantha, she had a close encounter with a large lion that she shared the screen with.
The 1972 Disney film featured a story that would be considered incredibly risky today. It followed a boy and his friend as they tried to rescue an old circus lion from retirement. The actress playing Samantha, Foster, was only around eight or nine years old during filming. Although meant to be a cheerful family movie, things quickly turned dangerous when the lion stopped performing tricks and started acting on its natural instincts.
Jodie Foster recently shared a harrowing experience from her childhood in an interview with W Magazine, explaining that she still bears the physical scars. She revealed she was attacked by a lion when she was around eight or nine years old. The attack happened quickly and unexpectedly, thankfully not while the cameras were recording.
Foster described the lion’s attack as frighteningly precise. She remembered the lion lifting her, shaking her violently, and throwing her. The attack caused serious injuries, leaving permanent scars. “I had two clean puncture wounds on one side of my hip, and then two more exactly like them on the other side,” she explained.
The attack happened between filming takes, so it wasn’t caught on camera. As Foster explained, “It didn’t happen during a take, it was afterward.” She added that she was so shocked, she doesn’t recall much of what happened. While Foster was in shock, the adults around her panicked.
Foster recounted a bizarre and frightening experience on set. She explained that the adults who were supposed to be in charge actually put their own safety first. She described being picked up and shaken, and then seeing the entire camera crew run away – not directly backwards, but sideways. She vividly remembers watching them flee, carrying their equipment with them as if escaping from her. It was a deeply unsettling sight.
Luckily, a trainer was nearby and quickly stepped in to prevent a serious injury. The woman recalled the trainer telling the lion to “Drop it,” and surprisingly, the lion obeyed. Looking back, she thinks the whole thing happened so fast she didn’t even have time to be scared, and it was the most frightening experience of her filmmaking career.
What was truly disturbing wasn’t just the incident itself, but the fact that producers wanted Foster to continue working with the same animal. After her hospital stay, she was brought back to set to finish filming. But the situation had changed – she now had to handle a rooster, making an already tense environment even more unpredictable.
Let me tell you, this story is wild. The trainer explained that after getting the all-clear from doctors, she went back to working with the same lion, but this time she brought a rooster with her. Apparently, that was a mistake! The lion was clearly confused by this little bird being near him. She saw the lion start to focus on her, like he was thinking about approaching, so she instinctively tossed the rooster and made a run for it. It was a moment she said she’d never forget, and honestly, can you blame her?
Jodie Foster is currently experiencing a significant comeback in television and streaming. She recently starred in the fourth season of the popular HBO series, True Detective: Night Country, playing Chief Liz Danvers. The show followed Danvers as she investigated the disappearance of researchers in the Alaskan town of Ennis. The season was both critically acclaimed and a commercial hit, and Foster won an Emmy Award for her performance.
Zendaya will continue working with HBO on a new, currently secret project. While details are still being developed, fans are excited to see what role she’ll take – whether it’s another intense investigative part or a return to movies. Her career, which began with a challenging start as a young performer on Disney, proves how strong and determined she is.
