Jennifer Lawrence Reveals She Lost a Quentin Tarantino Role After Being Told She Was “Not Pretty Enough”

Jennifer Lawrence recently revealed she didn’t get a big movie part because of her appearance, and she was very direct about it.

Actress and Oscar winner Margot Robbie recently revealed she was told she wasn’t considered ‘pretty enough’ for the role of Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. She shared this information during an event at 92NY, as reported by People magazine.

Lawrence revealed that Quentin Tarantino had considered her for the role of Sharon Tate, but the reaction to the idea was critical. She explained, “He wanted me, but people said I wasn’t attractive enough for the part.” Lawrence admitted that this experience still bothers her, even after many years, though interviewer Josh Horowitz questioned the accuracy of that claim.

She admitted she wasn’t entirely sure if the story was accurate, saying she’d repeated it for so long she’d started to believe it herself. She also wondered if she’d ever been a serious contender, and suggested the online response might have influenced things. She even speculated, “Maybe he simply never saw me as an option, and people on the internet just focused on calling me unattractive.”

Rumors about who would play Sharon Tate began in 2017 when Quentin Tarantino announced a movie about the Manson Family murders. Both Jennifer Lawrence and Margot Robbie were mentioned as possible choices for the role. Debra Tate, Sharon’s sister, publicly shared her opinion with TMZ, stating that Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t attractive enough to portray her sister. She added that Margot Robbie more closely resembled Sharon.

Shortly after, Robbie was officially chosen for the role. Her performance was highly acclaimed, and Debra Tate, Sharon Tate’s sister, later shared that watching Robbie act on set was a deeply moving experience. Vanity Fair reported that Tate said Robbie’s portrayal of Sharon was so accurate, it brought her to tears because she perfectly captured Sharon’s voice.

Tarantino later explained that Jennifer Lawrence initially auditioned for a different part in the film. He revealed on Marc Maron’s podcast in 2021 that she read for the role of Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme, but Dakota Fanning eventually got the part. While Lawrence was interested, Tarantino said things just didn’t quite come together for her in that role.

Jennifer Lawrence also admitted she regretted turning down a part in Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. During a discussion at 92NY, she said she should have accepted the role, which ultimately went to Jennifer Jason Leigh.
