TSMC: Fine, They Made Money

Okay, so Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM +6.24%) had a decent quarter. A decent quarter. Everyone’s acting like it’s some kind of monumental achievement. It went up 6.1% this morning. Six point one. Like that’s a round number or something. It’s just… irritating. They reported earnings, and surprise, surprise, they exceeded expectations.

Analysts thought they’d make $2.98 a share? Please. They made $3.14. $3.14! It’s like they’re deliberately trying to be difficult. Why not just hit the number? And sales were $33.7 billion. A billion over what was predicted. A billion! You know what a billion is? It’s a lot. It’s just… excessive.

TSMC Q4 Earnings – Or, “They Did Okay”

They grew sales 25% year over year. 25%! What are we, a charity? It’s all very… aggressive. And the margins? 62.3% gross, 54% operating, 48.3% net. It’s a parade of percentages. I mean, fine, good for them. But it’s just… a lot of numbers flying around. It’s exhausting.

Apparently, 77% of their business is now these “advanced” chips – 3-nanometer, 5-nanometer, 7-nanometer. What is a nanometer, anyway? It sounds like something you get at the doctor. And they’re predicting “continued strong demand.” Of course they are. That’s what they always predict. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. Their CFO, Wendell Huang – a perfectly respectable name, I suppose – says so.

Is TSMC a Buy? Honestly, Who Knows?

They’re guiding investors to expect revenue of $34.6 to $35.8 billion next quarter. Up to 9% growth. Nine percent! It’s like they’re trying to nickel and dime us. And the margins? 63-65% gross, 54-56% operating. More percentages! It never ends.

So, they’re making more money, and they expect to make even more profit on each dollar. It’s… efficient, I guess. They’re on track to earn at least $2.80 a share this year. At least. Like that’s some kind of guarantee. And they’re growing earnings faster than analysts predicted. Wonderful. Just… wonderful.

Even at a P/E of nearly 25, the stock looks like a buy. Fine. Buy it. I don’t care. But if it goes down, don’t come crying to me. I warned you about all the percentages. It’s just… unsettling. And frankly, I’m tired of looking at numbers.
