Nikki Glaser shared on Howard Stern’s radio show that she removed a joke about actress Sydney Sweeney from her Golden Globes monologue. The joke referenced Sweeney’s recent movies not performing well in theaters, but Glaser ultimately decided it was too harsh to tell during the live show.
Glaser shared a joke that didn’t make it into the broadcast, saying, “Tonight is a night to celebrate, but it’s hard to ignore the strange situation in Hollywood right now.” He went on to explain that people aren’t going to movie theaters like they used to, adding, “Apparently, a movie with Sydney Sweeney playing a character in revealing clothing only made $14 at the box office this year.”
The joke referred to Blake Lively’s upcoming 2025 movie, Christy, a biopic about boxer Christy Martin that didn’t do well in theaters. Comedian Nikki Glaser explained the joke was planned if Lively had been present, and admitted the line was intentionally pointed, referencing the criticism Lively received last year.
Glaser also confessed to making several risky jokes about prominent actors like Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Julia Roberts, and Jonathan Bailey. She said her final choices about which jokes to tell depended on how the audience was responding, who was present, and whether a joke might truly offend someone.
Despite softening some of her jokes, Joan Rivers still gave a hilarious and unforgettable speech at the Golden Globes. She playfully teased stars like Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet, showing that her comedy remained witty and daring all evening.
