After a lengthy search, Prime Video has chosen Ryan Hurst – famous for his work on shows like Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead – to play Kratos, the iconic Spartan warrior, in its upcoming live-action God of War series.
Christopher Judge, who previously provided the voice for Thor in God of War: Ragnarök, already had a relationship with the franchise before becoming a live-action actor in the series. Prime Video initially greenlit the show in December 2022, and it has evolved considerably since then.
The initial team working on the project departed in October 2024 when the producers decided to change the show’s focus. Soon after, Ronald D. Moore – known for creating popular shows like Outlander and Battlestar Galactica – joined as the new showrunner.
The show has been renewed for two seasons before it even airs, and they’re currently starting to cast actors and prepare for filming. Frederick E.O. Toye, who directed episodes of Shogun and The Boys, will direct the first two episodes.

The story centers on Kratos and his son, Atreus, continuing their journey from the recent Norse mythology-inspired games. They’ll be traveling to fulfill their mother and wife Faye’s final wish: to scatter her ashes.
The story follows Kratos as he attempts to guide his son, Atreus, in becoming a worthy god. At the same time, Atreus hopes to show his father how to reconnect with his humanity.
Actor Jacob Hurst is known for his roles in dramatic TV shows, including the recent Netflix Western, The Abandons. He’ll also be appearing in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film based on The Odyssey.
Sony Pictures TV, Amazon MGM Studios, and PlayStation Productions are teaming up to create the series. Leading the production are experienced executives such as Moore, Maril Davis, and Cory Barlog, who was the creative director on the 2018 game.
God of War is a video game series developed by Sony’s Santa Monica Studio and originally created by David Jaffe. The main games tell the story of Kratos as he travels through the worlds of Greek and Norse mythology, with a total of nine core titles released so far.
As a huge fan of gaming, I remember when this series first came out on the PlayStation 2 back in 2005. It’s become a massive hit since then – we’re talking over 66 million copies sold globally! It’s easily one of PlayStation’s biggest successes, and deservedly so, racking up tons of Game of the Year awards along the way.
Although a movie version was previously considered but never made, this new series on Prime Video is the first time the story has been brought to life in a live-action format. Filming is expected to start in Vancouver in March 2026.
Florence Pugh will be joining Matt Damon and Tom Holland in Christopher Nolan’s new film, The Odyssey. Damon will play Odysseus, Holland will play his son Telemachus, and Pugh is part of a large cast. The movie is set to come out on July 17, 2026.
Hurst is also well-known for his voice acting in other projects besides the God of War series. He recently provided voices for the animated show Weather Hunters, and before that, he voiced Lobo in the animated movie Superman: Man of Tomorrow.
Fans love this actor because of his strong build and distinctive, deep voice, which make him perfect for playing characters who are both tough and vulnerable. Many still consider his role as Opie Winston in Sons of Anarchy to be one of his best performances.
The first season of the God of War show will have 10 episodes and will tell the story from the 2018 game. It won’t cover Kratos’s past in Greece, instead focusing on his adventures and life in Midgard.
As a huge fan of the God of War games, I’m really excited about this series! With Christopher Judge reprising his role as Kratos and Ronald D. Moore leading the charge, it feels like they’re going to deliver a story that’s as powerful and moving as the games, but reach a whole new audience. From what I’ve heard, they’re committed to keeping the same incredible visual quality we’ve come to expect.
What do you think about Ryan Hurst being cast as Kratos for the live-action series in the comments?
