It’s become common for the Golden Globes host to discuss jokes that didn’t make the final broadcast, and Nikki Glaser recently did just that on The Howard Stern Show. She revealed she had planned jokes about both ICE and Donald Trump, but ultimately decided not to include them in the show.
Glaser explained to Stern that she generally stays away from political humor because she doesn’t find it funny. She had a bit planned about running out of ice at the bar – a joke she intended as a double entendre referencing ICE, the federal immigration enforcement agency – but ultimately decided against it. She felt even that joke was too lighthearted for the current climate and struggled with finding the right balance in her comedy.
The Golden Globes ceremony happened shortly after a Minneapolis ICE agent, Jonathan Ross, shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Good, leading to protests across the country. The Trump administration claimed Ross acted in self-defense. Several celebrities—including Mark Ruffalo, Natasha Lyonne, and Wanda Sykes—wore pins reading “Ice Out” and “Be Good” at the Globes to remember Good.
A joke referencing the Golden Globes venue being jokingly renamed the “Trump Beverly Hilton” – a nod to the recent controversy surrounding Donald Trump and the Kennedy Center – was cut from the show. According to host Jo Koy, it’s best to avoid mentioning the president’s name right now, and she wanted to give the topic some space. Steve Martin originally suggested the joke to her before the awards, but later advised against using it, urging her to stay away from political material.
Glaser’s opening monologue included a few current-event jokes that Stern liked, including one poking fun at CBS itself. She joked, “The award for most editing goes to CBS News. Yes. CBS news: America’s newest place to see B.S. news,” – a reference to the recent controversy where editor Bari Weiss reportedly stopped a 60 Minutes report about the U.S. sending people being deported to a prison in El Salvador.
Glasser also revealed she cut a joke involving Brad Pitt:
Brad Pitt is up for an award tonight for his performance in ‘F1’. It’s funny how Hollywood works – a man at 60 gets to play a racecar driver, but women over 35 are usually just offered roles as unhappy mothers. Brad, you were incredibly convincing as a driver – I almost believed you’d actually been racing for years! Apparently, he did a lot of the driving himself in the film. And Brad, no offense, but it looked like your turn signal was on the entire time during the scenes!
Nikki Glaser’s career is booming after making history as the first woman to host the Golden Globes by herself. She just finished a world tour called The Good Girl and is now on her Alive and Unwell tour, with shows booked in the U.S. and Europe well into 2026. Beyond stand-up, she’s also growing her presence in Hollywood with a new creative partnership with Judd Apatow.
The comedian will be writing, producing, and starring in a new, unconventional romantic comedy with Universal Pictures. This role is particularly special for her, as she previously worked as a nanny for the children of the director, bringing her career full circle.
Nikki Glaser isn’t just a movie star – she also hosts her popular podcast and is an executive producer on the reality show Lovers and Liars, a spin-off of FBoy Island. Plus, she’ll be performing a headlining residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas with David Spade through 2026.
