The rise of AI and tools like ChatGPT sparked widespread fears about job losses. While many worried, Hollywood screenwriters directly faced this concern, going on strike to defend the importance of human creativity in storytelling. Ironically, the team behind Netflix’s popular show, Stranger Things, is now involved in a debate that mirrors the very issues they were protesting against.
The new documentary about the making of Stranger Things 5 has fueled existing disappointment with the show’s ending, giving fans more reason to believe their criticisms are valid. For weeks, viewers have been discussing problems with the finale, but a more concerning claim is now circulating: that Matt and Ross Duffer, the show’s creators, didn’t write the final script entirely on their own.
Where did it all start?
Some viewers think Ross Duffer’s former wife, director Leigh Janiak, might have assisted with the writing. Others have speculated that artificial intelligence was actually used.
The theory really took off after viewers noticed something in the documentary: several ChatGPT tabs open on a computer used by one of the Russo Brothers. For fans already unhappy with the movie’s quick ending, this seemed to confirm their suspicions!
Fans were so upset with Season 5 that a theory called “Conformity Gate” emerged. This theory suggests that Episode 8 couldn’t possibly be the real finale after nine years of following the show.
After seeing how the show was made, a lot of fans felt the Duffer Brothers seemed distant or unsure about their own creative choices. This, along with reports of them using OpenAI tools, left many in the Stranger Things fanbase feeling disappointed and frustrated.
Fans online are buzzing, believing they’ve figured out the reason behind the disappointing season finale. One viewer explained that it now makes sense why the finale felt unfinished. Another fan directly blamed the show’s writing, suggesting the plot issues could only be explained by the use of AI like ChatGPT.
To make matters worse, the creators of the show, the Duffer Brothers, revealed they began filming Season 5 before they’d even finalized the ending. They said strict deadlines forced them to start shooting early episodes while still working on the later parts of the story.
