On January 11, 2026, celebrities at the Golden Globes used the red carpet as a platform to protest the recent deaths of Renee Nicole Goode and Keith Porter, who were shot by ICE agents. Actor Mark Ruffalo was particularly outspoken, directly criticizing President Donald Trump and addressing the tragic situation.
On January 7th in Minneapolis, 37-year-old mother and writer Monique Goode was fatally shot by ICE officer Jonathan Ross while she was in her car. The shooting occurred during a large federal immigration operation involving approximately 2,000 agents, shortly after Goode had dropped her child off at school. Separately, on New Year’s Eve, Keith Porter was shot and killed by an off-duty ICE agent in Los Angeles.
At the red carpet event, Mark Ruffalo and other stars like Wanda Sykes wore pins with the messages “BE GOOD” and “ICE OUT” to demonstrate solidarity with those affected and demand action.
Mark Ruffalo explained to USA Today that his outburst was dedicated to Renee Nicole Goode, a murder victim. He then strongly criticized Donald Trump, stating that the U.S. is engaged in an illegal conflict with Venezuela and that Trump disregards international law, prioritizing his own beliefs. Ruffalo called Trump “the worst human being” and warned that relying on his judgment for a country as powerful as the United States would be disastrous.
We’ve engaged in an unlawful invasion of Venezuela, and its leader is openly disregarding international law. He claims to be guided by his own sense of right and wrong, but he has a criminal record and a history of serious offenses.
Ruffalo stated that the individual is a pedophile and described him as a terrible person. He expressed concern that if someone with such questionable morals holds power in a leading nation, it poses a serious problem for everyone.
Ruffalo ended by expressing support for those harmed by ICE actions, stating, “This is for everyone who is scared and feels terrorized right now. I’m one of those people. I love this country, and what’s happening isn’t what America should be.”
Sykes used her visibility to voice strong opposition, telling Variety before the show that she believes it’s crucial to challenge the current administration and stop what she sees as harmful actions against people.
The recent red-carpet protest was organized by the American Civil Liberties Union as part of a broader campaign called ICE Out For Good. The ACLU explained on its website that the weekend of action – which included peaceful protests and vigils – aimed to remember those who have suffered due to ICE, hold the agency accountable, and highlight the real human impact of current policies.
During the Golden Globes, several stars used the event to highlight fatal shootings by ICE and call for reform. Mark Ruffalo, Wanda Sykes, and others emphasized their commitment to holding the government responsible and standing with those affected by ICE violence.
