At the 2026 Golden Globes, multiple Hollywood actors protested the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement after Renee Good was fatally shot by an ICE agent earlier this week.
Several celebrities—including Mark Ruffalo, Wanda Sykes, Jean Smart, Ariana Grande, and Natasha Lyonne—wore white pins with the message “Be good” at a recent red carpet event as a form of protest, according to reports from Variety and Entertainment Tonight.
In a recent interview with Variety, 61-year-old Sykes explained the meaning of a pin she was wearing. She stated it was to honor the mother who was killed by an ICE agent in Minnesota. Sykes expressed her support for those protesting and emphasized the need to actively oppose what she described as the government’s harmful actions towards people.
At the Golden Globes, Wanda Sykes wore a “Be Good” pin to remember Renee Good, who was killed by an ICE officer. Sykes stated, “We need to speak up and shut this rogue government down. It’s awful what they are doing to people.” This was reported during Variety’s Golden Globes Red Carpet Pre-Show.

The comedian accessorized with a statement pin and a silver jacket, and Mark Ruffalo wore his on a cream-colored suit. Jean Smart, who won Best Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy, explained to Entertainment Tonight that she chose to make a statement on the red carpet because of current events. “Everything feels overshadowed by what’s happening in our country right now,” she said.
It feels like the country is at a critical moment, and it’s going to be challenging. I hope people can stay calm and level-headed – that’s the biggest hurdle, I think. It will take bravery and addressing real concerns, but staying focused is key.
Smart clarified that she was speaking as a private citizen and mother, not simply as an actress. She acknowledged that some people may not want to hear from celebrities on social or political issues, but stressed she was sharing her personal views. “I hope people understand that,” she added.
In her acceptance speech, she reminded everyone of her earlier comments, saying, “There’s so much I could say tonight, but I already spoke my mind on the red carpet, so I won’t repeat it here. Thank you. I urge everyone to do what they know is right.”
The #BeGood campaign is a collaboration between Marmot, Move On, the National Domestic Workers Alliance, Working Families Power, and various entertainment industry figures. It also serves as a tribute to Keith Porter, who was fatally shot by an off-duty ICE agent in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve.
The campaign asks people to show kindness and support for each other during a difficult time – to be good citizens, neighbors, friends, and allies. The ACLU supports this effort, arguing that ICE isn’t actually improving community safety and is instead creating disruption and chaos.
Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, stated that the agency believes the death of Good was justified as self-defense against a potential act of domestic terrorism. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey disagreed with this assessment.
After watching the video, Frey stated plainly that the depiction was false. He described the involved officer’s actions as a reckless abuse of power that led to a death, and demanded the officer leave Minneapolis, making it clear they are not welcome.
Mark Ruffalo often uses award shows as a platform to express his views. For example, at last year’s Oscars, he wore a pin with Billie Eilish and Ava DuVernay urging a ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, and increased humanitarian aid for those affected.
While the 2026 Golden Globes honored the best in Hollywood, stars like Mark Ruffalo, Wanda Sykes, and Jean Smart used the event to highlight important social issues. By wearing protest pins and speaking out, they’ve started discussions about responsibility, taking action, and how celebrities can contribute to political conversations.
