Famous Celebrities Who Survived Aviation Accidents

As a big fan of these celebrities, it’s always shocking to hear about close calls they’ve had. I was reading about some really scary situations where their planes experienced major mechanical problems or even crashed! Thankfully, despite the danger, the people I read about all survived, which is incredible. It really makes you think about how risky flying can be, but also how strong people can be when faced with something terrifying. Their stories are just amazing.

Travis Barker

In 2008, Travis Barker was seriously injured in a plane crash in South Carolina when the jet he was traveling on went off the runway. He suffered extensive burns and needed multiple surgeries. Sadly, four people died in the crash, including two members of his team. After more than a decade, and with the help of his family, Barker was able to conquer his fear of flying.

Harrison Ford

In 2015, Harrison Ford was involved in a plane crash shortly after taking off in a vintage aircraft. He skillfully managed an emergency landing on a golf course in Santa Monica to steer clear of homes. Ford broke his arm and suffered a significant head wound in the crash. First responders commended his flying ability, noting it prevented more serious injuries to himself and others.

Adam Goldstein

DJ AM, whose real name was Adam Goldstein, was a survivor of the 2008 plane crash that also involved Travis Barker. Both men suffered severe injuries, and DJ AM received months of treatment for burns. The crash deeply affected him emotionally, as he dealt with the trauma of being one of just two people who lived through it. He and Barker supported each other during their recoveries, but sadly, DJ AM passed away a year later from causes unrelated to the accident.

Sandra Bullock

In 2000, Sandra Bullock experienced a frightening incident when the private jet she was traveling on missed the runway while landing in Wyoming. Due to a technical problem and difficult weather conditions, the plane ended up in a snowbank. Thankfully, Sandra and all the other passengers were able to get out safely without any injuries, although the plane was badly damaged. After the incident, the actress took some time away from public life to recover privately.

Patrick Swayze

In 2000, Patrick Swayze had to make an emergency landing in Arizona while flying his private plane. A problem with the plane’s pressurization system forced him to land on a neighborhood street. He skillfully maneuvered the aircraft between power lines and homes, and thankfully, no one on the ground was hurt. Swayze was the only person in the plane and wasn’t injured in the landing.

Jennifer Lawrence

In 2017, Jennifer Lawrence experienced a frightening ordeal when the engines on her private plane stopped working at 30,000 feet. While flying from Kentucky, the pilots had to make an emergency landing in Buffalo, New York. Thankfully, emergency crews were waiting on the runway, and while shaken up, Jennifer was unharmed.

Artimus Pyle

Artimus Pyle was among the few who survived the 1977 plane crash that tragically impacted the band Lynyrd Skynyrd. After escaping the wreckage, the drummer walked through the woods seeking help for his fellow band members. Despite suffering several broken ribs and other injuries, he reached a nearby farm and alerted local people. The crash remains a deeply remembered and devastating moment in rock music history.

Gary Rossington

Gary Rossington, a founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, was one of the few survivors of the tragic 1977 plane crash in Mississippi. He sustained severe injuries, including broken arms and legs, and spent months recovering in the hospital. Beyond the physical pain, he also grieved the loss of several bandmates. Rossington continued to perform with the band for many years, remaining its last surviving original member until his recent death.

Billy Powell

Billy Powell played keyboards for Lynyrd Skynyrd and was incredibly fortunate to survive the 1977 plane crash with only minor injuries. While he suffered a badly injured nose and deep cuts, he was able to help others after the crash. Uniquely, he was the only band member able to attend the funerals of those who died. Powell continued making music and later rejoined the band when it reformed.

Ed Robertson

In 2008, Ed Robertson, the frontman for Barenaked Ladies, was flying his own seaplane in Ontario when it crashed shortly after taking off. The plane stalled and went down in a dense forest, but thankfully, Ed and his three passengers were able to get out with just minor injuries. The plane was a total loss, but Ed later said his flight training helped him handle the emergency and bring the plane down as safely as possible.
