Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of Elden Ring, believes George R. R. Martin, who contributed to the game’s initial concept, would be surprised by how much the final game evolved from their original ideas.
In an interview with Game Informer, Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that George R.R. Martin contributed to the initial world and character concepts, but FromSoftware’s writers ultimately fleshed those ideas out within the game. Miyazaki even hinted that some of the final results were so different from Martin’s original concepts that the author might be surprised to see them.
So, Miyazaki-san explained it really makes sense why he gets so involved in the level design. He says when we’re playing, we only get bits and pieces of the story, the world, and even what the monsters are all about. But he knows everything! He wants to make sure the important stuff isn’t missed, so he basically builds the maps and levels to gently guide us, give us clues, and help us figure out the world’s story ourselves. It’s like he’s giving us the tools to piece things together, which is awesome.
I think it’s amazing how well Elden Ring turned out, especially considering George R.R. Martin was only involved in the world-building. Even though GRRM himself said it “looks incredible,” Hidetaka Miyazaki really ran with that foundation and created something special. He believes – and I totally agree – that the game still stands out years later, it’s just in a league of its own!
