A24’s New Horror Film ‘Undertone’ Unveils First Trailer — and It’s Deeply Unsettling

A24 just dropped the first trailer for their new horror film, Undertone. The movie seems to be a subtly creepy story that builds tension through sound and atmosphere, rather than relying on sudden, startling moments.

Okay, so I just heard about this new movie called Undertone. It’s directed by Ian Tuason, and it’s actually his first time directing a full-length feature – pretty cool! The story centers around Evy, played by Nina Kiri, who co-hosts a podcast about the paranormal. Here’s the twist: she’s a total skeptic! Her co-host, Justin (voiced by Kris Holden-Ried), totally believes in ghosts, which should make for some fun dynamic. Things get interesting when Evy has to move back home to care for her seriously ill mother, and I’m guessing that’s when things start getting really spooky.

As Evy cares for her sick mother, she begins receiving mysterious audio recordings. A couple sends them, claiming to hear unsettling sounds in their home. The more Evy listens to the tapes and investigates, the more disturbed she becomes. Fear creeps in, and she starts to doubt her own perception of reality.

Experience a chilling new horror film, Undertone, directed by Ian Tuason. The trailer is now available, and the movie hits theaters this Friday, March 13th.

A key creative decision in the film is that we only ever see Evy on screen. All other characters are present solely as voices – including her podcast co-host, mother, and the people featured in the recordings. The movie prioritizes sound over visuals to create suspense and move the story forward.

I was really excited to see that Michèle Duquet, Keana Lyn Bastidas, Jeff Yung, Sarah Beaudin, and Brian Quintero are all lending their voices to this film! And it’s cool to know it was actually filmed right here in Toronto, way back in early 2025.

The film Undertone premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival in July and quickly gained attention, winning the festival’s top prize for Canadian films. Shortly after, A24 acquired the rights to distribute the movie globally. It’s currently scheduled to be released in U.S. and Canadian theaters on March 13, 2026.

The new trailer is light on details but creates a really unsettling atmosphere. It looks like the movie will be a slow-burn horror that relies on sound – and the lack of it – to build suspense and frighten viewers.
