Nicolas Cage revealed he was once considered for the role of Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings movies. He told Newsweek that he had discussions with the filmmakers about playing the part, but Viggo Mortensen eventually landed the role.
Nicolas Cage explained that he wasn’t able to take the opportunity due to the timing and other personal obligations he had at the time. He said he had commitments that made it impossible to travel and be away from home for three years. He also added that he prefers to watch movies as a viewer, rather than review his own work.
Even though he turned down the chance to be in a hugely popular film series, Nicolas Cage says he doesn’t regret his decision. He explained that he can enjoy those movies as a viewer, something he rarely experiences with his own work. He specifically mentioned enjoying watching the Lord of the Rings films, adding, “I genuinely do have the joy of watching these—especially with Lord of the Rings.”
During the filming of the movie, Viggo Mortensen had a couple of close calls – he actually blocked a real thrown blade from an actor playing an Orc, and he broke his toe while filming a fight. Nicolas Cage has often wondered what the film might have been like if he’d played Aragorn, but ultimately feels good about the final result.
Nicolas Cage collaborated with several actors from the Lord of the Rings films in other projects. He appeared with Sean Bean in National Treasure and worked with Elijah Wood on The Trust.
Wood has often praised working with Nicolas Cage. In an interview with Hot Ones, Wood recalled moments on set where Cage would deliver a line and Wood would be struck by how uniquely “Nic Cage” it was. He described Cage as a pleasure to work with and enjoyed observing his creative approach.
Nicolas Cage’s experience demonstrates that even starring in big movies doesn’t always work out perfectly. He appears content to simply enjoy those films as a viewer, all while continuing to deliver strong performances in the projects he chooses.
