EXCLUSIVE: Kate Hudson reveals why she chose Song Sung Blue script and surprising past with director Craig Brewer

Song Sung Blue, a film set in Milwaukee, follows two musicians deeply in love but struggling financially. They meet while performing as a Dan Ho impersonator and a Patsy Cline tribute artist, and are drawn into the tribute band scene. Together, they form a duo called Lightning and Thunder, inspired by Neil Diamond. The film premiered on December 25, 2025, after a screening at the American Film Institute Film Festival on October 26.

I was so excited when I learned I’d be able to chat with Kate Hudson just before the movie comes out in India on January 9, 2026! She plays Claire Sardina, and I was really curious about what made her decide to take the role. She shared that she first read the script and instantly connected with it. What really sealed the deal, though, was her past experience working with the director, Craig Brewer. She said knowing him already made the whole process so much fun and comfortable.

She told us she was struck by how rare it is to see movies like this made these days, and how exciting it was to be involved in one that was actually happening.

She shared that she’s admired filmmaker Craig for a long time, ever since they first met when she was in her early twenties. She said it feels surreal that after all these years and gaining so much experience, they’re finally collaborating on a film together.

The movie Song Sung Blue tells the story of Mike and Claire Sardina, a couple who dream of making it as a singing duo despite facing financial hardships. They form a Neil Diamond tribute act and fight to stay together, pursuing their dreams on their own terms.
