Okay, I just saw the first trailer for The Rip, and it looks fantastic! It’s a new thriller coming to Netflix with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon – seriously, those two always deliver, and this one seems really gripping. I’m definitely adding it to my watchlist.
The movie brings together director Joe Carnahan and his frequent partners, and will be available on Netflix later this month.
Watch below.
What Is The Rip About?
The series The Rip is set in Miami and centers around the Miami-Dade Tactical Narcotics Team. After a large drug raid turns up over $20 million in cash, what seemed like a simple operation quickly becomes a dangerous situation.
In the movie, Matt Damon stars as Lieutenant Dane Dumars. He explains that Miami law requires all seized money to be counted immediately, so everyone is aware of the total amount. This creates a dangerous situation for the team when they suspect the money comes from a drug cartel and find themselves in enemy territory.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon at Odds
Ben Affleck plays Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne, who has worked with Dumars for many years. Their working relationship is tense because Dumars recently received a promotion, making him Byrne’s superior.
Things really fall apart when the money comes into play. From the trailer, it’s clear trust disappears quickly – I even saw a scene where Byrne directly accuses Dumars of wanting to take the cash for himself. It looks like a total breakdown of their relationship!

Surrounded, Trapped, and Running Out of Time
The danger from outside grows as the team faces threatening phone calls and neighbors communicate with each other using flashing lights. Police are unable to leave without putting themselves at risk, so they’re forced to stay put, guard the money, and keep a close watch on each other.
I’m on the edge of my seat! The characters have stumbled onto a lot of money that belongs to some seriously scary people, and you just know they’re coming to collect. That’s what drives all the intense action in the trailer – the gunfights, the chases, even the shootouts on rooftops! It’s a desperate situation, and it looks amazing.
Release Date
The Rip premieres on Netflix on January 16.
