Despite performing well internationally, the newest Avatar movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is currently predicted to be the lowest-earning film in the entire Avatar series.
As of December 31st, the movie has earned $242.3 million domestically (in the US and Canada) and $609.5 million internationally, for a global total of $851.8 million.
Leading up to its release in the U.S., Deadline Hollywood predicted the film would earn between $340 and $380 million worldwide during its opening weekend. It ultimately opened with $347 million globally, with $12 million of that coming from previews in North America on Thursday.
Although these films topped the box office and exceeded the $77 million opening weekend of the 2009 movie Avatar, their numbers were significantly lower than those of Avatar: The Way of Water, which debuted domestically with $134.1 million in 2022.
The movie Fire and Ash earned $89.2 million during its opening weekend in the U.S. and Canada. It stayed in first place the following weekend, bringing in $63.1 million – a decrease of 29% from its debut. This drop in sales was less significant than the 53% decrease experienced by The Way of Water during its second weekend.

Avatar: The Way of Water made $684.1 million in North America and $1.636 billion internationally, for a worldwide total of $2.32 billion. The first Avatar film earned $785.2 million in the U.S. and Canada and $2.138 billion elsewhere, bringing its total worldwide earnings to almost $2.923 billion.
Although Fire and Ash is doing reasonably well in theaters, it’s not performing as strongly as previous films in the series. Lower ticket sales both domestically and worldwide suggest a change for this franchise, which has been known for breaking box office records for the last ten years.
