Everything We Know About the New Live-Action ‘Stranger Things’ Spinoff

I’m so excited to hear that a live-action Stranger Things spinoff is happening! The Duffer brothers, who created the original series, have apparently been working on this for a while, but they’re keeping most of the details under wraps. We haven’t gotten much information yet, just a few hints, but I’m really hoping we’ll learn more soon!

In a 2022 interview with Variety, the creators of the show, the Duffers, revealed that very few people are aware of a core idea behind the next stage of the story. They believe this concept will be a big surprise, even to Netflix, because it’s significantly different from what viewers might expect.

Surprisingly, actor Finn Wolfhard actually figured out the idea himself. The creators, the Duffer brothers, emphasized, “But no one else knows about it yet!” Wolfhard later shared on The Tonight Show in 2023 that he came up with the idea while brainstorming ways to make the world of Stranger Things even bigger and more interesting.

The upcoming spin-off series won’t follow any characters or storylines from the original Stranger Things, including the mysterious Upside Down. According to Ross Duffer, speaking with Screen Rant, the new show will be connected to the original in some ways, but it will tell a completely separate story with a new cast and a different setting. It will also be set in a different decade than the 1980s. Duffer confirmed that the original Stranger Things has reached its conclusion for the characters in Hawkins and the world of the Upside Down.

According to Matt Duffer, the upcoming spinoff will maintain the same feel and atmosphere as Stranger Things, but won’t overcomplicate the plot. Ross Duffer explained that while it will have connections to the original series, it will also feel like a standalone collection of stories.

As a huge fan of the show, I remember Noah Wolfhard mentioning that it might become an anthology series, kind of like Twin Peaks, with each season taking place in a different location, but still somehow linked to the Upside Down. Apparently, the Duffer Brothers later told Deadline that wasn’t quite what they had in mind, and maybe Noah was just misremembering what they’d discussed. It’s a little confusing, but honestly, an anthology format would be amazing!

Ross Duffer suggested the last episode of Stranger Things has a subtle hint about a potential spinoff, saying, “We’ll see if viewers notice it.”

There’s no confirmed release date yet. In October, Netflix’s head of creative, Bela Bajaria, mentioned she hadn’t received any updates on the project. However, Matt Duffer recently told Deadline in November that they’re working to move forward quickly and hope to have news soon.
